I now have a little more time on my hands and would like to get more serious about trap shooting. I have numerous i6 gauge guns that I use for skeet, sporting clays and the occasional round of trap but they all weight in around six pounds.

Call me stubborn or addicted but I am not going to switch to a twelve gauge for trap shooting. Would any of you gentleman have a suggestion for a sixteen that has some weight to it and would stand up to the constant pounding of trap shooting.

Regards
John

john:
the rem 870's and 1100's are built on the 12 ga frame and will do a fine job of soaking up recoil. plus, you can bolt on an actual 12 ga trap stock to get "your eyes up"

870,

That's a great idea, but is that true of a '50s era 870--being able to bolt on a 12 ga stock? I ask because the face of my 16 ga stock (where it meets the receiver) is stamped "16".

662 I shoot a Mod 12 16 all the time and I don't have a problem with the recoil. I know guys that shoot 12 and are always complanining about recoil. The bes load I like that I have been shooting for years is With a mec 26 bushing and 800x powder. I have been shooting it for so long for trap I forgot what grain it throws now. Its a 1oz load and works very well back to shootoffs at the 35 yrd line. 7.5shot. I dow have a roll over cheek piece on my stock and a morgan recoil pad. But the recoil is not bad at all.

I'd look for one of those newer 16 gauge Remington 1100 "Classics" with the 28" barrel. They have a lot of weight out front and should make an excellent trap gun.

Old 16, my biggest concern was "getting my eyes up" as 870 put it. What kind of cheek pad do you use?

662:
i did a little research and yes, the 50's era 870 16's are built on a full sized frame. if you go to gunbroker, there is a 50's era 870 for sale right now with a serial # suffix of W.
my 2003 wingmaster has a serial # suffix of W.
my circa 1971-72 wingmaster skeet 20ga has a suffix of X....denoting a full sized frame, 23/4" chamber for that gauge.
this data comes from my rem shop manual. sooooooo all rem 1100 and 870 16ga's have always been built on a full sized (12ga) frame.
yes, the butt stock is stamped "16ga" but so are the shell latch, shell interupter, bolt and carrier etc....all metal parts are machined to 16ga dimensions to work inside the 12ga receiver, however we are dealing with the outside dimensions when talking about the furniture.

about 7-8 yrs ago, i was standing on the trap line with another fellow shooting an 870 with worn bluing and smooth barrel (no rib) and some of the nicest "c" grade wood i have ever seen.
i thought it was a restoration project in the works, until i saw a funny little purple hull flying out of the receiver after every shot Exclamation

a very unique, one of a kind trap gun indeed Very Happy
i thought about doing it myself, but i'm not that big into trap.

I have been using a NFA Pardner.
The best gun made in the USA $109.95 new in the box.
Try one you may be very pleasantly surpised.
H&R/NFA has making basically the same gun since the 1880's.
They point very naturally and pattern well.

Several years ago I had fajen make me a semi-inleted roll over cheek piece and finished it out. I you want an number of the guy that bought fajen out pm me. He is very reasonable.
