Might be interesting. I've shot at the "southern" there the last 3 years. I's a bit of a hike from DC but.....

Anybody planning on going?

I would like to go but I may have to work.

I have heard the number of shooters there was overwhelming and the shoot is very popular (Re: Southern).

I have also heard nothing but good things about the shoots they have and the staff. I live about an hour from there.

That's my old stompin' ground! Deep River is a very nice setup and Bill Kempffer / owner is very good about trying to make it a good experience for folks.

They've got a tower with "duck pond" which is pretty cool too.

Unlike a lot of SC courses there are few (to none) really long shots. It's a great course for 7/8 oz and fairly open chokes.

Do they still have the crossing shots at the tower?... over the pond. I don't know about you, but those seemed pretty distant to me. Had to lead them a buslength (took me a while to figure THAT out)

The last 2 times I shot there the tower shots were set up to be taken as they were dropping in just past the island in the middle of the pond. To take them as crossers you'd have to set up the shooting station more to the right. I'm sure they set them up that way sometimes, but not for the preliminaries at the Southern SxS.

As I remember it taking them as a long crosser would have been 30 yards or less. Other than the fact that they would be "edge on" you would not really need much choke for them.

That could be, probably just seemed that way relative to my shooting ability Laughing . You're right about the rest of the course for sure, fairly close shots albeit with limited windows in at least a few cases.

They used to have a nice 5-stand setup, but I don't see that on their web page. Looks like they might be doing something with a wobble trap instead. Still, I liked the place when I used to go there.

I don't know about the rest of the year but they set up the 5 stand during the Southern. That's where the annual Parker vs LC Smith shoot has been the last three years. I shoot the SC's during the Southern, but the main reason I go is the Parker/LC Smith event. It's a hoot.

Just looking at the guns in the racks on the range is worth the trip. I enjoy looking at the guns actually being shot more than the (beautiful) eye candy up in the tents.

BTW, Team Parker has won the last two years. Very Happy

Go team!

That's one of the few things I miss, since I've been here in Maine, is being able to go to Deep River year round, any given day of the week.

So far as "eye candy" goes, Maine's known more for B.M.W.s (big Maine women) than what one might see down south...not that I'd look mind you, being the married man that I now am. Rolling Eyes

It was fun to drool over that rack.
