I recently bought a 16 ga. pre-war drilling (a Kerner). Needless to say, the chambers are 2 9/16. It's a bit of a restoration project with barrel pits, dented wood, ugly add-on recoil pad, and some oxidized spots on the exterior. It's currently boxed to send to Mr. Orlen to see about the barrel pits and a small dent at the muzzle.
While it's there, I'm tempted to tell him to lengthen the chambers, if possible. I respect originality tremendously and I do worry some with a gun that isn't found on every gunshow table. And I do reload and could make short shells, but it would put me somewhat at ease to not worry about which shells I have in my pocket. Plus, it would obviously just be less work to only load one shell length. Also, I'm not sure how it would affect future sale value (not that guns ever seem to do anything but accumulate).
Obviously I'm in a quandry. Any guidance?
Vaguely related, anyone know a good doublegun (triplegun?) smith in the Dallas, TX area? So many people think they know what they're doing and so few are right.
Thanks
