Does anyone know if it's possible to put a Winchester model 12 20 guage barrel on a 16 guage with out alteration? Thanks. |

Yes. Just make sure you use 18ga. shells.

I put the question out there for information, not to be made fun of. |

MTP: I stand admonished and rightly so.
Please accept my apology.
That was no way to respond to a new member of our society and I welcome you aboard!
You cannot use a 20 ga. barrel on a 16 ga. receiver. If you are patient and keep an eye on the auction sites (e-bay especially) I think you will find a 16ga. barrel that will work for you. There are Model 12 affectionadeo's here that can provide more help than I. Good luck in your search!

Probably lots of people know more about this than I do, but I was under an impression that the receiver of the Model 12 was the same in 16, 20, & 28 gauges. If so, maybe the project of switching gauges might not be totally impossible. Anybody able to cast more light? |

Actually I believe it can be done. I know the chamber ring, bolt, extractors and the shell cutoff are different from the 16ga. And of course barrell & mag tube. Sounds like more trouble than it's worth though. |

That is interesting information. I think it is not a good idea to convert a 16 to a 20 anyway since nothing is gained, but the technical stuff is good to know. |

Can probably be done, but probably not worth the time and effort unless you have parts you want to use up. Years ago, there was a booming trade in small frame Model 12's being converted to 28 gauge guns, because factory 28's were so scarce and expensive. The small frames are all the same size (28-20-16 gauge), and the wood is the same, so if a 20 can be converted to a 28, I would think it's even easier to convert a 16 to 20. I have not done one of these, but I do own a 28 conversion. Unless you know what you are looking for, you can't tell that it's not factory. For the 28 conversion, there is some welding required inside the frame. Not sure if this applies to your contemplated project. You might try calling Rick Phillips at Phillips Supply in Azuza CA. Rick sells ammo and reloading components, and used to do the 28 conversions. Could also call Midwest Gunworks in MO; they are the Winchester/Browning Model 12 experts and parts supplier. |
