We went out last weekend for the KS opener and as you have probably heard, there wasn't good news about the pheasant hatch. Our experience bore that out although we did find a decent number of last yr birds. Saturday was somewhat productive but between the high hunter activity Sat and the warm, dry conditions, Sunday wasn't productive at all. Most, if not all, of our birds were last year roosters.
Here a picture of the first round's success all bagged with 16s.
Yours truly with my pup's first phez.
End of the day

Thanks Ben. The gun in the pic is my hunting partner's backup gun and I believe it is a Savage. His primary gun is a Sterlingworth and my gun is a Merkel 1620.

Sounds and looks like a great trip, HC. I'm looking at trying to hunt the walk in areas in the eastern part of the state in the upcoming weeks. We'll see! Would love to see and hear about your new pup. |

I'm haven't been finding nearly the number of birds this year as compared to last year. The ones we have been seeing have been flushing wild at 200 to 400 yards. Quail numbers seem to be improving. I'm finding quail in areas they haven't been in for the past few years but am still only moving one or two covies per day. Course it is not helping things that I lost my two old Setters since February and I am starting over with a year old pup. |

Flyline - my pups will turn three this month, but this is only their second season. The one in the picture seems to have pretty well gotten it, but her sister is still working on it because of less time in the field and on birds. I have a deposit on a lab puppy to do my retrieving chores. We lost several birds on the hunt which just makes me sick. |
