Gentlemen:
Previously reported that I lucked into a 16 ga sterlingworth - restocked with decent wood, modern dimensions, beavertail, and some type of parkerized finished. 28 inch barrels - 2.5 inch chambers, wood needs checkering
Also hit the mother load when I purchased a set of in-the-white fox barrels in 30 and 32 inch configurations They came yesterday - both in pretty good shape - will need the ribs filed, hand finishing with files and emory cloth, and chambers finish cut. Extracters there, but need rim cuts for shells and fine polishing. The three barrels look cool together on the floor - just longing to be carried in the field.
Now the adventure begins
I have decided that I will get the barrels fitted (came with one set of forend iron - will fit both longer barrels to one forend) and reblued. 2.75 chambers all around
I think I will leave the all-weather finish on the receiver
I have also pretty much decided to go for briley thin-walls in all three sets of barrels - gives a lot of flexibility for all three sets.
I have also considered restocking with straight stock, high grade at Wenigs....
and to have receiver re-engraved tastefully and re-case colored (the good revdocdrews recommendation - however, if I do this he will be coveting so much that he might not be able to dash through the fields in pursuit of the wascally birds...)
Just don't know yet where to go for all this work
What kind of price do you think I am looking at???
what say you?????
before I start I will set up pictures and then also show again when finished... |

I like the Briley thin wall idea for the 30" brls as your do-everthing-ers but what would you want in the 32" other than IM/F for trap? and why not Sk 1/ Sk 2 in the 28" as your dedicated quail brls? and how about a splinter FE for the 28" but beavertail for the 30" & 32"? (Boy this is fun )
And you didn't even mention the custom 3 brl Huey case

With 3 sets of barrels for one gun. Why in the world put Briley chokes in any of them? You should be able to choke those three barrels to cover any situation you need. Don't wreck the barrels with choke tubes. |

Drew:
If you are meeting me in Russell KS we need to get something straight
It's an Auburn War Eagle on the right side, a Clemson Tiger on the left, and an SIUE Cougar on the bottom of the receiver.
That other dog you mentioned belongs at our sattelite campus SIU-C. Note that we don't even have an hyphen in our name any longer....
Dave M.
Thanks for the advice, just tossing out ideas and trying to get revdocdrew to loosen his wallet not mine - stay tuned.... |

Leave the "All Weather" finish? Blasphemy, pure and simple. However, after having seen the pictures of "blown up" Sterlys (Rev's got 'em on hand, I'm sure) I might be tempted to just go with a sympathetic polish rather than the full recolored route.
I 'gotta agree, there is no need for choke tubes in ANY of the barrels. Pick something, chokewise, and learn to shoot it.
Those big rectangular gun cases are a sure money pit, and not at all useful, either, if, by useful, you mean going hunting with the gun. But, they look neat.
You are going to be spending some money for what you have described, that is for sure. I'll toss Kirk Merrington's name out there as well for the barrel work. Have fun.
Best,
Ted |

Sounds like a fun project.
I had the same knee-jerk reaction about the choke tubes as the others. I'd recommend three different combinations of fixed chokes for the three barrel sets. Possibly SK/IC, IC/IM, and M/F and cover the gamut! That way you can actually justify the three sets. |

Gentlemen:
hmmm... fixed chokes, my choices would be :
28 inch - light mod/light full (for roosters/sporting clays)
30 inch - ic/light mod (skeet/sporting clays/preserve birds/quail)
32 inch - mod/light full (late season roosters/trap/waterfowl)
Go ahead and let er rip - what say you
Oh and Ted - no worries, I can shoot any choke. For fun here we shoot skeet with full chokes occasionally and I have been know to run them. Those station 8 birds sure disappear (no visible pieces) |
