Anyone have some old checkering tools collecting dust you want to get rid of? I got a nice piece of walnut from someone here for my model 11 and would like to put a pattern down close to original.

I picked up a set a while back and haven't used them but dont want to get rid of them. I'll let you borrow them if you pay the shipping.

Really appreciate the offer! I have some plans for a couple other stocks so really looking to own. Plus as somewhat a perfectionist i have no idea how long it will take me. Lol.

... Unless you are experienced with checkering - NO you don't want to buy checkering tools.

Checkering is not for amateurs.

It is FAR more involved than you think.

Do some research first - and there's lots to learn.

Avoid the heartbreak of f__king up a stock.

Besides checkering tools, a checkering cradle is required for best results.

And after: doing your research, buying a COMPLETE set of checkering tools, and also buying a checkering cradle - now you have to develop checkering skills.

Checkering is kind of like sketching - which is relatively easy to put pencil to paper.

With checkering it's like sketching into hard wood with tiny little scrapers & rasps.

Most people start with checkering a piece of hardwood.

Don't even consider checkering a stock until you've mastered checkering your desired pattern into a piece of hard wood.

This reply may seam a little harsh, but in the end you'll thank me.

I screwed up one stock, and my buddy totally ruined the stock of his favorite 28 GA over/under.

That gun went from being my buddy's number 1 'go to' gun into a closet queen - which he'll never be able to sell or trade.

Ugh.

Bill K is spot on. I redid the checkering on one of my guns that was very worn but still visible; I figured all I gotta do is follow the old lines - how hard can it be? The answer: a hell of a lot harder than I thought. I only got off line once but it still bugs the hell out of me every time I look at it. Never again.

Read the books and practice a lot then practice some more. Gunstocks Inc. sells reject walnut stocks for $5.00 ea. Get good on that contoured surface then go for it.
