Yesterday I handled a 16 ga Bernadelli Roma 4. It was a fairly nice gun with double triggers, straight grip, good grained wood and deeply black blueing. Fit and balance were great. But it had fake sidelocks, which is a really disturbing feature.

However, I like the gun enough for perhaps achieving it. But first I would be grateful to read about your opinions and experiences about that gun.

Pete

I can remember Larry Brown saying nice things about the Roma. As far as the false side plates, I have three Berettas with false side plates and find they look fine and don't add to the mechanical function of the gun at all. They only give the engraver a little more metal to work on. If the price looks good don't wait too long.

Vincenzo Bernardelli made many excellent firearms over 250+ years but sadly, went OB 10 or more years ago. There were few made in 16 GA, I have looked in vain for one for years. The Roma series were boxlocks and many had sideplates.

My GOTO grouse gun for many years was a Roma 4 20 GA, fired many thousands of rounds at game and clays. Its been darn near bulletproof. I recently bought a near new Gamecock Premier 20.

Just be sure you are dealing with the V. Bernies, there are other Bernardelli named guns out there , P. Bernie and Santi Bernie, etc. Not the same makers and not the same quality I have heard.

"IF" it fits, BUY IT.

Sorry for the bad picture. The gun is hardly used. If I take it, I swap with a Husqvarna 12 ga.

Thanks for inputs!

Looks a great deal like my Beretta 16 gauge 411E which is my go to field gun. If it fits I wouldn't wait too long.

Our 12ga V Bernardelli SxS has wonderful performance, handling, and appearance. It was a great value. After 1000 rds or so the lever is just past 6 o'clock but the lockup is still tight and solid. It looks like it may even have chopper lump barrels, no monobloc marks to be seen but I am not an expert. A very fine firearm.

I have two,

one sideplate "Woodcock Premier" , 28" Barrels
and
one hammer "Brescia", 30" Barrels

Both are well made firearms and a joy to shoot

Mike

Looks like a nice gun I'm not familiar with the make so I checked out there website , they are very old firm and make some nice guns but I noticed they have suspended production from February 2017 , hopefully they can get sorted and get up and running again . I just heard Arietta have folded ,hard times all around. We will all have to do our bit and buy more new guns 😉

Another offer came with an email yesterday: A Krieghoff O/U sidelock dural 16ga. The price is better than for the fake sidelock Bernie, but the stock model is not quite in my taste. Nonetheless, as usual always thankful for your inputs!

I have one of these with a second barrel set in 16/70 over 7x65R. This gun is a wand....and the stock is more mental than anything else.

A clarification on my earlier post on V Bernadelli barrels. The barrels are neither monobloc nor chopper-lump, but have a welded-on lug. From their website: "The Bernardelli barrel system is not a traditional monobloc system. Therefore, the tube diameters are not excessively large and allow the frame sizes to be appropriate to the gauge. The bottom of the barrels features a welded on lug with the function of allowing a perfect fit between action and barrels."

In a chopper lump barrel, the lug is part of the barrel forging, and is considered the strongest, but also the most costly, lug design. To my knowledge AyA remains one of the few manufacturers of affordably priced shotguns with chopper lump barrels.

Today I got a mail with an apology from the seller: The Krieghoff was 50% more expensive than in the first mail.

However, the Bernie is far nicer, and I appreciate the encouraging comments.
