Bought several cases of Herters select field 1oz#8's. I was/am having ejection problems with both my mosel 12 and new Browning A5 sweet Sixteen. In comparing
the width of the brass on the base of the Herters to other makers including Cheddites, I found that the bases of Herters were noticeably smaller and were not being picked up by the ejectors.
Anyone else have this issue?
Cheers, John |

I shoot those shells and reloads from those shells in two different break open guns. Have had zero problems. |

I have had the same issue in my Model 12 and my Model 97. Both don't like to reliably eject. I have been using them as my second shot at skeet or sporting clays because of it, and I do not feel comfortable using them on doves or other game in those guns. The empties work great cut to 2.5" and roll crimped for my old sxs. I still wish they would work in my go to guns.

Same thing happens in my 16 ga. Ithaca. I traded my empties for RGL hulls. 20 gauge is worse yet but the 12 gauge that I have picked up and reloaded are fine. |

I have never shot any out of an auto loader but the side by sides, o/u's, pumps and single shots have all loved them. Send the rest of that box or case back for exchange |

First of all, we all know what you mean by "brass". It's the "base" of the shell. Some folks call it the "head". Correct me if I have misnamed the part. However, I can't recall the last year bases were actually made of solid brass. Today, the head is made from steel and a thin wash of "brass" coats the steel. Steel bases on shotshells don't expand and contract like the old brass. Therein lies the difficulty with steel based shells of some manufacturers (and some varieties within the same company) in some guns. |

I too have experienced the issue.
I wonder if Herters shells are being made by a variety of manufacturers with some variations in tolerances. |

Yep 0 problems with my break open guns -- just with pumps and semi's.
Yes, I was indeed referring to the base width -- compare them with the width of Federals, Remington's, Rio's and all others by placing them base to base and the Herter's are noticeably smaller! Thanks for the feedback!

As more people have these issues...perhaps the ammo price will drop due to sluggish sales! My doubles will gladly digest them for doves and clays. |

They work fine in all my 16 ga SXS's, in fact, I prefer them in my 1932 16 ga A H Fox. The only issue I have is the necks seem to split along the crimp line after 2-3 reloadings. Still, you've got to love having purple hulls. Anyone completely unenamoured with those hulls, I'd be glad to buy your once fired hulls. |

My 870 from 1950 and my dad's 1100 from 1971 both have problems with ejecting herter's shells. Neither of my two model 31's from 1947 have an issue. |

My then new 870 Express SuperMag Waterfowler/Turkey ( Express is synonym for junk) wouldn't extract RGL's, but would extract and eject Win Promos. Gil |

I believe most older guns had tighter chambers. My model 12's don't like them either. But my side x sides and o/I'd work fine. When I size today's shells I use my super sixer. Elminatesb99% of the problem with the steel heads.
Lucky I have about a thousand old compression 1pc brass AA's with brass heads yet. |
