I didn't want to muddy up my earlier topic since it was going so well.
But I have a case of Rio shells that I am wondering if there is any load data out there available for them.
All my Lyman manual mostly concentrates on are the 3 name US brand hulls.
Don't recall ever seeing anything on them at hogdons load data website either.
Extra points for SP16 wads because that's mostly what I have on hand. |

Ballistic Products Inc. offers a reloading manual for Rio hulls. If you are looking for help hear load data "GOOD LUCK". Seems that there are only a couple of people that will offer help on Rio data. I asked for help with load data for loading Bismuth in Rio hulls and got "ONE" response. THANK YOU 16gaDavis for your help.. |

oldhunter's spreadsheets has a fair amount of Rio data and FWIW since most of my 16ga reloads are not near max pressure I load Rio's the same as Ched data. I see no real appreciable performance issues/differences but still blame them for misses.

I load a lot of Rio hulls and I use Ched and Fio data but have to use the Rio primer to avoid a loose fit |

I reload RIO's in both 12 and 16. I treat them like Cheddite hulls.
I don't use Euro primers so I do reset the primer pockets for US size primers. A bit of work, but for me it is worth the effort. |

Thank you for the reply gentlemen.
I was able to find some load data from an unverified source. I don't guarantee the fitness or safety of none of them though. |

Dogchaser, are you reaming them, similar to how a rifle cartridge is decrimped or ?? |

other way around they have to be recrimped to a smaller size to use US 209 ns in the Rio hull and often in the Ched and Fio |

Just put a 3/8 socket extension into the hull and smack it o ce or twice, primer pocket resized.to hold American primers. Its how the bpi tool works, wbich I also have. |

I make the primer pockets smaller with the tool from Precision Reloading |

Oh, forgot to say:
http://www.ballisticproducts.com/load14_12_12.htm
BPI Load of the Week 12 Dec 14, has 4 loads for Rio hulls, 16ga. They all use Herco powder... probably not too many folks have it now, but it used to be my #1 powder for 16ga, so maybe the longer-owning folks on this forum have it.
Here's the link to their archive, which they recently pulled down and made difficult to access but this is a backdoor:
http://www.ballisticproducts.com/loadoftheweekarchive.htm
I have 19 loads in my spreadsheets for Rio hulls, all from BPI. I see also from their non-purchase LOTW some loads from 15/8/14. And they have a steel load and ITX10 on that page for Rio hulls too.
Good luck! |

This is my opinion from working with exclusively straight wall hulls for almost 3 years in both 12 and 16 Gauge.
Talking 16 Gauge, Cheddite, Winchester 2 piece, Rio, Herter and Federal......I wouldn't get at all concerned with specific loads for any of them, for 1 oz. and lighter loads I would load them all using the same data. There isn't enough difference in these hulls to bother with. The only thing I have found is that they can be primer sensitive from a consistent ballistics POV, but pressures and velocities, at least with these lighter loads stay very close. Especially if you stick with Universal & Unique and it seems like a good amount of the data using Green Dot.
You don't have to take my word for it just look through Old Hunters spreadsheets.
I have found the same thing with 12 gauge 1 oz. & 7/8 oz. loads using 700-X or American Select in Federal Gold Medal, Top Gun, Herter, Rio, Cheddite, Estate, the newer Federal 2 pc. hull. Just not enough difference in actual performance to go looking for specific data. |

Yep, that's what I considered doing the next time I need some powder or primers. |

Shipping charges for primers killed my interest in bothering with Rio primers. The nearest place to buy them here is 135 miles away. Not cool if you run low at the wrong time.
Being stuck with only one primer choice during shortages is not a good thing either. I have been there with specific loads for individual rifles and it caused me hell during fur season when my ammo was helping pay the bills. I have been leery of such situations ever since. For folks with better availability, the decision is entirely one of preference. |
