Someone recently bought a very nice Model 90 on Gunbroker. We may need to rethink the value of Model 90's based on the selling price. http://www.gunbroker.com/item/694572185 |

That is some rather nice feather crotch wood on that gun.
The wood on mine is nicer than most but not quite that nice.
The serial number of that gun has an X on it in all the pictures. Mine is a J in some places
But also has the X too in some
I have found 2 or 3 others over the years that had nicer wood and they all have an X someplace. Although no records exist and no one seems to know I am pretty sure at this point that X means it was either custom ordered or an upgrade at the factory to the standard grade wood. |

I called Ron Borko, long-time member of the Marlin firearms Collectors Association, who owns many Model 90's. I asked him if he knew the significance of the X by the serial number on the extractor slide or other areas. He said he has seen the x on some of his guns and on some Marlin rifles, but he has never heard or seen an explanation of its significance.
As you probably know, the H-serial number on the gun that just sold on GB indicates it was made in 1951, the year the lever forearm was introduced. Your J-serial number gun was made in 1952. Marlin did not use the letters I, O or Q. |

Checked my H series and it has the X AFTER the serial number on the right side extractor arm and inside the forearm on the metal. See the X is ahead of the serial number on the GB gun??? Don't know if that has any significance. No special wood on mine though. |

I checked several of my Model 90's and none have an X by the serial number.
Here is a photo of my special Model 90 Skeetking. It is the only model 90 that I have with special wood. Because it is a Skeetking, it has an S above the serial number on the bottom of the frame and in front of the serial number on the extractor slide..
