A couple of my nephews have coerced me along on one of their yearly South Dakota soirees in search of a ringneck or two. I've never been, so wondered about any specific rules or things I need to be aware of. For instance: is lead shot still OK? Any special requirements for amount of blaze orange worn, etc? Thanks...

About the only place you can use lead is private land. Too bad the bird predictions are so bad. It's certainly the place to go for pheasants. Also opening week you can't hunt till noon. Then 10:00. Lots of public land, however I understand it has been opened up for haying as well as the CRP due to drought conditions in certain areas. Good luck.

It never hurts to call the game office in the zone you plan to hunt in. The guy on the ground there will have lots of good input.

what nasty g said . The problem we run into on Standing Rock is the private land amongst the Indian . The Indian regs are diff . Best to use a lead substitute and always be right . Also , leave a piece of ID on the birds when transporting , especially when flying . You may run into checks at the airport , the state gamies are tough , but the Feds are impossible !

As for bird ID:

A head, wing, or foot is to be left ATTACHED.

I usually leave the foot attached. No feathers in the bag that way. Just my personal pref. is all. When cleaning the birds I will cut the tendons to the foot but leave it attached at the joint. This allows the foot to be folded into the leg, toes retracted so as to help with the toes & spur not puncturing the bag.

Never used any non-tox ammo; recommendations?

I have some Federal steel 2's & 4's I'm using. Seem to do the trick if sent to the right address.

Plain ole steel #2 shot puts nice holes in the Phez if you get the pattern on them. If bird isn't in the pattern it doesn't matter how spendy the shell is. I'm personally too cheap to pony up for the Golden Phez & other FINE Phez loads. Yes, the 2-3$ per round non tox shot may & does out perfrom #2 steel shot. #2 steel kills them dead enough for me & even penetrates through the back. DO NOT SHOOT ANY STEEL SHOT THROUGH a FULL CHOKE. You already know this I'm sure. Steel shot also patterns tighter than lead through the same choke. Don't be averse to using mod or something slightly more open.

Sorry; guess I shoulda been more specific. Was planning to shoot my Fox 16's but I'm not sure I can find a suitable non-tox load. Steel is out. RST's are only available in 7-1/2 shot, are $75 a box and they're out of stock anyway. Maybe some hevi-shot?

Fin Seems that Dave Erickson did some patterns last summer with the Kent Bismuth from Cabelas. I think others have reported good results with the 5's on Pheasants. I've bought some, but haven't tried them. About$16/box of 10.

If one of the barrels on that Fox is a full forget the Heavy Shot as well go with the Bizmuth, either way. I love the stuff

Kent Bismuth #5 used it all last year, works fine.
Used the the 12ga version the year before and it worked great too.
Only way to go for non-toxic in 16ga.
