Hello,
I currently own a 16 GA sxs with fixed barrels. I want to have removable choke tubes installed. Anyone know someone who does this, and roughly how much this should cost.
Thank you |

I think Mike is one of the best out there. He does not however install Thin Wall Chokes, so call him and check first if he can put screw-ins in your barrels. He is pretty up on many guns, but might need you to have the actual bore checked. I know he can not put chokes in some early Citori barrels, they had to go to Briley for Thin walls, who also could do it for you.

I've used a couple of different gunsmiths mentioned above, and the only one I've never had any issues with the job was Briley. It costs a little more than using one of the others, but not nearly as much as a ruined gun. |

Thanks for all the replies! I just emailed Mike, now waiting for a response. Hopefully I can get this work done pretty soon. Thanks again |

Kevin,
Rich Painter here in Economy, Pa is the Master Gun Maker who works on my Double Guns. I have contracted his talents down thru the years many times, never a problem. Look up Economy Gun Smithing on the Net or call 724-266-0232 to talk to him personally at the Gun Shop, I highly recommend him.

The latest work Rich Paitner did for me was the restoration of my 1889 L.C. Smith Gun Stocks, on my #2 Gun. Just before that he worked his magic and installed a pre 13 Set of 16 Gauge Krupp Barrels on one of my damaged Elsie double guns.
The #2, 20 Gauge Elsie, custom sleeved and choked for 28 Gauge by Briley, many many years ago.

As mentioned communication is not Mike's strong suit even if his work is. He is also usually hard to get on the phone. If I have a gun I want opened up I will send him just the barrel with the amount listed on his chart from SGW plus at least enough for return postage. You will not likely hear from him but the barrel will usually show back up in a couple of weeks. Instead of "choke" prefer to tell him how much constriction such as .003 & .012.
When it comes to tubes Briley is who I use though. Price chart http://www.briley.com/c-407-choke-installation-pricing.aspx Note that you get 5 choke tubes. And there is no extra charge for having the choke tubes bore matched to the constriction that you request. For example 5 tubes at .004 .008 .012 .016 .020 each or whatever you desire. |

I've had Mike do several guns for me. From here in Georgia to New England and back 8 days on all jobs. I think he had his shop set up in the mail truck. Gil |

You guys are making me nervous. I sent 3 repeater barrels for work on August 9th, and I'm still waiting. I spoke to him once and he said he was backed up. I am willing to wait for good work, and I hate bothering a craftsman, but I think I need to call again.
