Today with ominous looking clouds and temps in the low 30's our WY pheasant season opens. Annie is beside herself and can hardly wait. She keeps coming over to me me and when she gets my attention, she heads towards the door and looks back at me.
I should have waited until the last minute before pulling a shotgun out of the safe, which is her indicator that we are heading out for some action.
Annie will sleep good tonight. |

Good luck today.
I am pacing the floor waiting for next Saturday, the opener in Ks.
I have my 16 ga Citori heritage packed. And have a couple boxes of my reloads, 1 1/8 ounces of nickel plated #6 shot. |

My dogs are bugging me too. But, they will have to wait till the 15th. And it won't be pheasants. It will be desert quail. |

Well ... things didn't work out as planned. Mother Nature decided to change conditions with high winds and horizontal snow. Annie and I will wait until this afternoon to chase birds. It's no big deal because I usually harvest only 1 or 2 birds per outing and as soon as I leave my house I begin hunting.
I discovered that I had only 4 of my favorite RMC brass pheasant loads and the delay will give me time to load up a few. |

Hope you have better conditions this afternoon.
There is a covey just outside my friends house. We usuallyonly get 3-4 birds out of thet covey in any one year. They live in some nasty stuff. Last year though we had a dusting of a couple inches snow. They couldn't hide from us. We could have taken most of that covey. Didn't, but could have. They owe us now. |

3crosses,
it's not how many birds a man shoots, it how you shoot the birds. Always give the birds more than a sporting chance shoot only pointed birds, never hunt the same bird more than twice, always shoot flying. Always back up your shots when you think you may have winged a bird.

Dave,
My chessie had some pretty frank words to your assertion I should only shoot pointed birds. Some I would not say with my mother in the room .

eng-pointer,
Flushing dogs have their own set of rules, with the Boykins gone from our family I often mentally negate flushing dogs, my apologies no disrespect to your fantastic animals!

Josh we didn't hunt due to blizzard conditions.
Today we hunted after church and Annie had a great time, but did not get birdy.
We hunted for a little over an hour and my legs said it was time to quit and my 6 lb. 2 oz. 16 ga. weighed 100 lbs. Even at a 100 lbs. my #2 AyA still felt and looked good.
This year the birds are few and far between. Tomorrow Annie and I will try a different area of the ranch and see what happens.
The hunt was especially wonderful because today was the first time that I have been hunting or fishing since last January.
I was diagnosed with esophagus cancer and went through Chemo and radiation treatments. I have had 3 tests and I'm cancer free.
A few months ago I couldn't lift a 65 lb. bale of hay and I'm happy to say that my strength and stamina are slowly coming back.
For the last few months I have been getting into ranch work and managed to get my winter firewood cut split and stacked. At this time of the year the only things that need to be done is feeding twice a day and the occasional fence repair. |

Sorry to learn of your cancer Jim. Great news that you are free of it and are getting your strength back. Hope you have another decade or two left in you. I'm sure Annie wants to keep you around. 😉 Take care.

jschultz,
I’m sorry to hear about the cancer, the lack of birds too! I’m glad to hear you beat it and are on the mend though. I hope you and Annie have a great hunt today. |

Thank you one and all for the kind words. Today in Wyoming's Banana Belt the high temps for the next few days are predicted to be below freezing with a strong wind.
We have horizontal snow again, but not to much. Annie and I will brave the elements around 3pm, when temps will be around 27 deg. f. |
