I'd be a little leery of cutting it down, even if you installed choke tubes. As noted above, cutting it down will change the handling, probably considerably and likely not for the better (for anything other than grouse snapshooting). The other thing, which no one mentioned, is that shorter barrels can have unpredictably inconsistent patterns. I've told previously how my drilling, with 23.6 inch barrels choked modified, can have bird-sized holes in its pattern at normal ranges with normal shells. With the drilling I broke both wings and both legs of one pheasant while leaving not a pellet hole in its body, at a bit over 25 yards. Longer barrels appear to give more consistent results.

Of course, in the unlikely event you miss with a short-barreled gun, I've just given you a great reason to explain it.
