Does anyone on this site re-load 16 gauge for Turkey loads?..or is there a specific Turkey load that can be purchased. I have a bunch of old 16 ga Winchester high brass 2 3/4" 1 1/4oz #4's. I will be shooting a Remington 1100 16 ga with a dedicated xtra-full Colonial Arms extended choke with a 28" barrel..how do you think those might work?..any suggestions.
Thanks,
Marty |

Before "magic" turkey loads were developed to separate hunters from cash many turkeys were killed with standard shotshell loads.
I have killed many turkeys with 16 gauge 1 1/8 oz loads of #6, #5, or 4 shot with modified choke.
You should be fine with what you have within reasonable range. |

Ok...thanks just wasn't sure if #4's are not to big. I have always used #5's in my 12 gauge but I have lots of #4's 1 1/4 oz in 16 gauge.
Thanks for your input.

Marty,
I have my reloading setup about 2 hours from you in southern Illinois, most of what I’ve read and patterned has been using a .60 turkey choke from Trulock through a BPS. My load is 1-1/4 oz of buffered #6 at around 1,125 fps out to around 35 yards.
Get real good patterns with it.
I have Trulock’s turkey choke for RemChoke too. If we could meet up sometime I’d give you a couple loads and let you barrow the Choke to test out. |

The last turkey I killed was with some Herters 16 ga field loads, 1 /8oz of #5's. |

I have killed turkeys with both 6's and 5's and to be honest, I don't really get the need for super tight chokes and big heavy loads. You are pointing the head and they aren't hardly moving.
I have this opinion that the ammo/gun manufacturers are selling snake oil.
YMMV |

In recent years, I have done quite a lot of both spring and fall turkey hunting. A few years ago, I purchased a super tight turkey choke for my Winchester 1200, 12 gauge.
The first spring season that I used it, I missed 3 turkeys. I sold off the choke and went back to a standard full choke tube. I have not missed or wounded a bird since (5 birds, all 1-shot kills).
I have shot several turkeys with both 12 and 16 gauge shotguns using standard 1 1/8 oz pheasant loads and modified choke.
I often use my 16 gauge for fall turkey hunting as the birds tend to be smaller and are also easier to get in close.
I would wager that any choke/shot combination would kill a turkey within 20-25 yards.
It does not take much to develop a choke/shell combination that can kill a turkey between 25-35 yards.
At 30-~40 yards, a full choke becomes useful.
If you want to shoot beyond 40 yards, you should probably get into specialized turkey choke and load combinations.
To me, the joy of turkey hunting is to get the bird in close. 35 yards is my personal limit for my 12 gauge gun and 30 yards is the limit for my 16 gauge gun.
Play the game how you want to play and have fun.
I wish you the best this season. |

Mine is a weak sample of one, as I shot a hen in the Fall season using a Fiocchi factory loading of 4's. I found out the shot was closer to #3 in size, but it didn't matter at close range through a choke of .003". I was trying to scare the birds toward a friend but they had changed direction before I got to where I thought "behind them" was.
If intentionally hunting them I'd pattern the 4s, 5s and 6s on hand and go with the most uniform. |

I've only shot a few, and all were shot with 12ga baby magnums with 6's because that's what I had. None were past 25-30 yds. At that range, just about anything that shoots where it's pointed and patterns decently should work. |
