Folks, I have the opportunity to buy about 13 boxes of 16 ga. Winchester Compression Formed High brass SuperX shells manufactured in the 80's or sometime around there. What's a fair value on these. I would probably use them for pheasant and chukar hunting. Also will I be able to reload these with steel shot?

Thanks for any accurate info.

I bought three boxes, I believe I paid $15 each about six months ago.
I will shoot them but my intent was to get the empties to have a very good hull for some pheasant loads.
I donít load any steel, so canít answer that question.

Scott,
the value of these hulls lies in their reloadability, they reload great and last for many reloads. HOWEVER-- they ARE a tapered base hull with low volume, so they are NOT GOOD FOR STEEL. They make a nice 1oz hull.

For steel shot, with the 16ga you are VERY limited in volume... it's easier for me to get 1oz in the 20ga SAM1 wad/hull than the 16ga pt1680 wad. And the hull volumes are small enough that you are right up against SAAMI max pressure trying to launch 410gr up near 1500 fps. Even a tiny increase in hull volume for the initial burn will lower pressures or increase pressures several thousand PSI.

The tapered hull Win AA CF or old remingtons? reduce volume so much that they are not really useful for 7/8 oz or greater steel loads. You need Federal hulls, or cheddite (Herters or OEM unfired), or Rio for decent volumes.

That all being said, I'd buy those shells for $15 a box or so, myself, if they were something I'd shoot. But remember that most guys are liking Herters/cheddite hulls for reloading in #1 position right now, and you can buy it from Cabelas for $60-$70 a flat shipped to your door.

With the Compression formed Winchester 16 gauge hulls they make some very effective lead loads up to 1 1/8 oz which should work for upland bird shooting. You can go up to 1 1/4 oz but the velocities area bit on the slow side as they do build more pressure than straight wall hulls.
For steel shot they aren't the greatest, the straight wall Winchester Upland Polyformed hulls make excellent steel loads if you can find them. If the price is right I would buy them.

I'm going to buy them tomorrow. $5.00 box. Don't know if I will use all of them but I figure I would pick them up.

Just picked them up. 14 boxes, all SuperX Magnum #4's, a few #5's. $5.00 a box. The guy I got them from had neck surgery and didn't want to use any Magnums. I prefer #4's anyways for Pheasant and Chukar, they seem to drop the birds better for me than #5's or #6's. Now if I could just find that many birds to use them on. Anyways won't have to buy anymore lead 16's anytime soon.

Probably needed neck surgery because he was shooting those magnum 4's!

Be very afraid!

I just pitched some rotten cardboard boxes when I put the shells in a plastic case (last month). They were $5+change (5.47 maybe? on the box) when I bought them new in early 90s from a hardware store called Sam's (not a Walton store)...

Too late. Just shot some last night. They work like a champ. Don't kick bad at all!
