Just picked up a Winchester Model 1912. (I guess this is the same as a Model 12.) Barrel is maked nickel steel. Its 16 gauge, of course, Full choke. Corncob forend. Serial number is 151xxx indicating 1917 model. What gets me is dimensions. LOP is roughly 13 3/8. Barrel is 24 3/4 to receiver. Does not appear modified. Used but I think in remarkably good condition for a hunting gun considering its 101 years old.

Does all this sound standard? Almost seems like a youth model, although I don’t think there was any such thing.

When I saw the short barrel I was really hoping for IC, skeet or cylinder choke.

For clarification, is the barrel marked full and it measures full at the muzzle?

I measured it by caliper and it is roughly 0.645 inches if that helps. That seems to be abput the same as the measurement of the modified barrels on my Fox model B and Stevens 311. Does that help?

Stock does not appear shortened. Is that the approximate LOP of these guns? Not sure what the standard full choke barrel lenght should be either.

Your barrel is a 26, at that time you could get any choke you wanted on any barrel length. Measure from the front of ejection port on M12s. , actual barrel length is to the closed bolt face. Note your gun is 2 9/16 chamber and more important ejection port. LOP is not unreasonable, but my 1917 vintage gun was shortened by first owner's son, so I can't help there.
Love to see some pics Smile

I don't have any Winchester paper dated 1917, but the 1916 Winchester catalog gives the length-of-pull for a 16- or 20-gauge Plain Finished Model 1912 as 13 5/8 inch.

The Model 1912 is the same as the Model 12, the name was changed sometime before 1920.

My Model 1912, serial number 195xxx (made about 1919), also has 26" nickel steel barrels. The choke is modified. The LOP is about 13 1/2", which is kinda short, but I don't believe it was shortened after it left the factory. Dave Riffle's book on the Model 12 mentions that "standard" LOP in 1924 for the 16ga was 13 3/4".

Rking22 is correct that your M1912 was chambered for 2 9/16" shells. However, many of the older 16s were later modified to use 2 3/4" shells by Winchester and local gunsmiths. I had this done to my gun about 20 years ago, but given the current availability of 2 1/2" 16ga shells I don't think I would bother doing it today.

Thanks for all the replies. Sounds like it is unaltered then compared to others on here.

If someone gives me a email address w can send them pics. I’m not smart enough to post.
