I see a Winchester Model 1400 MK-II 16 Gauge for sale on GunBroker. Supposedly NIB and unfired. I know the 1400's were a fairly cheap made auto loader that Winchester made in the 60's and 70's. Any opinions on this model and what this gun might be worth?

A 16 Ga. barrel on a 12 Ga. receiver...I wouldn't be too interested.

{skeettx} Are you thinking that is a Mossberg tube? The 1400 is best I have ever seen. Good wood and choke tubes. If someone wants that model, this would be the one. I have two friends that shot 12ga 1400's for years.

I have a 16ga 1400 MKII with 26" VR IC barrel that I got at Cabela's a couple years ago for <$250. I have a couple of the 12ga guns and a 20ga as well. It took me 2 hrs to clean the crud out of it but once cleaned, it ran perfectly just like the 12ga gun I bought 54 years ago.

The 1400 with it Aluminum receiver and rotary bolt was years ahead of it time. If properly maintained, they work fine. At least mine do.

The only issue with the 16ga gun is that they simply took a 12ga barrel and bore it to 16. Obviously the action was modified as well but the result is a 16ga that weights 4 oz more that a 12ga with the same barrel length.

At 7 lbs 2 oz, I don't carry it much for bird hunting but it is my go to 16ga skeet gun. Recoil is nonexistent.

I once had a 1400 12 gauge. To me it was a "clunker". Forearm was like holding an oil can. Didn't like the safety. I traded it off at a local gun shop for my wife's present Remington 1100 ladies/youth 20 gauge.
A year later, I find out a coworker of mine bought it at the same gun shop. He is a Winchester nut. He loved it.
Go figure - one mans junk is another man's treasure - literally......

The early 1400 and 1400 MKII had decent stocks. Toward then end of the run, they started putting them out with absolutely awful stocks. The forend became round and almost corn cob like on some of them. The wood looked like a low grade 2 X 4. If you had one of those, I can see your point. Mine are not that bad. The triggers take a little getting used to. Quite light but they are almost like a 2 stage military trigger. You can move the trigger back a good 1/8" before it hits the sear. If you are a trigger masher, you probably don't notice it. If you press the trigger it can be distracting if you don't take up the slack before engaging the target.

I've had the original 12ga gun since I was 16 and I'm now 70. Its taken everything from deer to snipe and I'll not part with it in this life. Too many memories.

I have one in 12 Ga.
Plain barrel. Win choke. Shot a lot of steel with it, in the late 70's. Girlfriend bought it for me for Christmas.
It's NEVER missed a beat, and shot cases of steel, we reloaded, back then, mostly with AA hulls, but some Mohalk and Canucks mixed in.....

NSSA Hall of Famer Wayne Mayes shot the snot out of a 1400 and it's apparently in the NSSA museum down in Texas. Sounds like a viable option for a functional and likely durable 16ga semi-auto.

When did Winchester start doing that, and in exactly what ways?

Good to see Todd Bender chimed in amongst the speculations. Didn't address Winchester's direct involvement, but at least one contributor suspected it.

I got my son a 1400 II in 12ga several years ago for Christmas. He shoots trap, skeet and sporting clays with it and although he is only a trip a year hunter, he uses the 1400 and it runs strong for him with no issues.
