never mind, if they made the 870 in skeet after the war, then I am sure they did in the 31 also.

It looks like Skeet and Trap grades were frequently enough just a way to get nicer stocks and maybe other optional items for people who might have had no intent to shoot clays with them. Ithaca 37S and 37T that show up for sale carry the range of chokes. I don't think I've seen a M12 Trap with other than Full choke shown but it's possible of course. My 16ga M21 is a Trap grade but with 26" barrels choked Mod in the right and Cyl in the left I doubt it saw many Trap fields. My 12ga Skeet grade 21 was more clay-appropriate with 28" bbls and typical WS1/WS2 chokes. It was very suitable for Skeet doubles with .005" and .014" constriction shooting 7/8oz reloads, and a set of tubes handled the other gauges in their events.

The key to making clays guns out of our bird guns is in the stock and some skeet shooters here have gone to Trap-dimensioned stocks for their game. I can see the potential in it, and would go that route if returning to the all-gauges game.

In the 1930s, the Model 21 came in four grades -- Standard, Tournament, Trap and Custom Built grade. One could get a Trap Gun in Tournament, Trap or Custom Built Grade. When the Skeet Gun was introduced, it was offered in Tournament, Trap and Custom Built grades. By the mid-1930s the Tournament Grade was dropped from the offerings and the basic Skeet Gun became the Standard Grade Skeet Gun. A bit later the Trap Grade went away as well and there was Field Gun, the Skeet Gun, the Trap Gun and the Custom Built grade which could be had as a Field Gun, Skeet Gun, or Trap Gun. For a period of time the Custom Built Grade was changed to the Deluxe Grade.

Those Remington items I posted are from 1937 & 39. In 1941, the Model 31 got the larger trigger group, and the 1941 version Model 31 was made until early 1950. The Model 870 appears in the October 1950 Remington Arms Co., Inc. catalog.

I should be receiving a period 870 very soon, on which to mount my barrel.
