Are these primers the same size as Americans 209's and can thy be substituted for Win 209 recipes? Will they enlarge the primer pockets of American shells.
Can Win, CCI and Fed 209 primers be interchanged?
Thank you. |

Slightly larger, if at all.
Yes with Winchester 209, at least according to Hodgdon.
Very slightly, and not enough to cause a leak or a loose primer.
No, they are all very different primers. Only the Winchester 209 is close to a Cheddite. |

Are you asking about the Federal 209, or the 209A. The only available Federal primer today is the 209A -- a magnum primer, quite different from the old Federal 209, which seemed to be much more like a Win209 in the load data. Nothing is for sure about the degree of similarity of those, though.
Primers, primers . . . unless one is shooting tens of thousands of rounds and want to save maybe a hundred bucks per ten thousand rounds, why not just buy the primer listed for the load? And if one is shooting tens of thousands of rounds, a hundred bucks here and there is chickenfeed -- hell that's only 30 or so gallons of gasoline. How far will that take us down the road.
Primers are 75 cents a box, plus or minus about a dime, depending on brand/source. Sales tax on the cheapest shells is likely somewhere between 25 and 50 cents a box depending on location. We are talking serious chickenfeed here. Buy the primer listed for the load, or whistle in the dark. It is very unlikely the choice will hurt you anyway. |

Hey Smoke, how many primers are you getting for .75? I pay $4.25 per 100 here! |

Smoke
your right I'll gust stick to my Win primers. I only shoot about 25 games of skeet a year and maybe use 200 a year for hunting loads and I only have used Win 209 for all of my loads. Ned to find a good sale on them and buy 5,000 or so. |

If I buy right, I get a case of 5000 for $125. $150 is the max I seem to ever pay for 5000. But I guess if you buy by the hundred maybe it does cost more than $3, but not by much. One should never buy less than 1000, and that should still be $25 to $30 these days. Remington STS are more costly, Nobel Sport and Cheddite, and maybe Fiocchi 616's a bit less than Winchester 209's. Fed 209A's seem always to be more costly than Win209's. |
