I found a sixteen gauge sxs for sale in a pawn shop. That was the only name on it, When I looked up Brevette I found it means patent. Has anybody seen one of these befor? The outside was 85-90%. But, when I looked down the bores it looked like two mountain ranges. Any ideas? Idea

Actually was not to interested in buying the sxs. I'm more of an A-5 guy anyway. Just never heard the name befor(Brevette). Actually was a nice looking gun on the outside. What really surprised me is that the owner of the shop didn't even realize the shape the bores were in. Oh well, it's off to bed. Grouse season is over so I'm going up to the local pheasant run and let the old lab chase a couple of pheasants in the morning. Maybe I can even hit a couple of them with the old A-5.

What does he want for it? I think it's probably French, maybe Belgian. I have seen some pretty gnarly barrels clean up perfect, but it all depends on how deep the pitting is, and how much barrel wall thickness is there, which requires a gauge with which to measure them. Too risky without knowing, only way to know is to get it on approval, ship it to someone (like me) with a gauge, and we can poke, probe and measure, and render a verdict. If the gun is cheap enough, it could be worth the trouble.....probably $50 a bore to ream 'em clean, but we'd only ever get that far if the walls were meaty enough (like 30 thousandths of an inch or more), and the inner crust relatively shallow....... this kind of stuff is fun to treasure hunters like me....

....and I agree with the other fellers, he knew what was in those bores.....

Duncan

I'm answering tis because Of the reference made to the dealer. He did not know the shape of the bores befor I showed them to him. I've dealt with him many times. He's a young person taking over the business from his parents. I've bought guns and electronic stuff from them Any problems they refund with no problem. My last purchase from them was an L C Smith 12 gauge serial #106403 for $295.00. IT's tight, the bores check out good and it shoots fine. http://good-times.webshots.com/photo/2848085010099813036AptVeq

Typically, French guns have plenty of wall thickness-they have to, French proof is 1270 BAR.

There is a better than good chance the gun would clean up. PM me with the dealer name. I'll look if no-one else will.
Best,
Ted

Dear Old Hunter,

My apologies sir for jumping to conclusions about the integrity of your young dealer friend. My few years in the gun trade have rendered me a little cynical I guess, and I'm wrong to judge like that so quick.... sorry, and I'm glad you stuck up for him and got a good gun from him!

Kind regards,

Duncan

Ted, let me know how it goes, I agree with you, I think it should clean up and probably make a fantastic little field gun, if you pass (i.e never get it from the dealer), let me know, I might take a swing at it....,

Duncan

Well gentlemen. I'm sorry to say the Brevette is gone. I was a day late and a dollar short. But: I found some other 16 gauges. A Fox Sterlingsworth for $2995.00 and another French gun sxs for $799.00. They are up at Backus, Minnesota. The gunshop is right on hwy 371 located in a convenience store. BP gas. The fox has been restocked with wood that looks like plastic. The frnch sxs has the strap that pulls out of the stock. As I'm an A-5 person I asked him about any A-5's. He sent on down this morning to a show. The show is in the southern states. He wasn't sure where. Also the A-5 had a gold trigger. But he only wanted to get & 380.00 to $390.00 dollars out of it because it was old. It left at 9:00 this morning. I went by at 8:30 and only stopped on the way home because gas was cheaper. He seemed to think the show was in one of the Carolina's. Anybody see a A-5 16 gauge, well I quess you'll grab it. Sure would like it though. Embarassed

Dear Old Hunter,

Just for grins, what did the Brevette go for, do you know? And thanks for the head's up on it, there are several of us around that love project guns like that......the other Frenchie sounds like one of those higher end Manufrance guns....

Kind regards,

Duncan

it went for $300.00. That is what so stupid on my part. But there's more out there. Actually I'm a browning person. But I've missed a couple of them. Anyway I'm going up pheasant hunting Tuesday. Found some 2-1/2 shells for my L C Smith. I'll see how they work. Hoping someday for the perfect gun and the perfect dog. But befor then it's just fun hunting.

No, it's not stupid, who could've known that the rusted hulk would sell so quick?....I bet it was one of us who's quicker than the rest of us that grabbed up that little project......

all the best,

Duncan
