I have pierced a few with RST and Polywad shells but not with winchester shells which seem to be harder.Being I have a hammered sxs it looks like I can access the pins.Is this a easy fix or should I just shoot shells with harder primers. Thanks Aurelio

Aurelio,

If it's only a few, I would leave the pin adjustment alone. You may have gotten some soft primers. Keep an eye on what is actually happening before you make adjustments. If this keeps happening with the SpredR shells the majority of the time, I would 1st notify the companies and ask if they had some primer problems. Then if you determine it is a firing pin problem, either have a Master Gun Maker adjust your firing pins or have the pins replaced.

Changes are this maybe some soft primers.

If you are shooting RST and Polywad in a hammer gun I assume you are shooting low pressure loads in an old gun. If that is the case, your Winchesters may have too much pressure for an old gun. Pierced primers throw junk back into your action so if you get a lot of it you may have to clean the innards at some point. A minor adjustment of the length or contour of the nose of the firing pin (maybe too sharp) may take care of your problem. If you have the ability to measure, the firing pin normally extends between .045-.055" if I recall correctly.

Thanks,I shot a 1/2 box of federal 1ounce game loads today and no problem so I will stay away from the rst and poly wads for now although I really like there spreader loads.

I called RST and they were very helpful the primers they use are softer but he informed me since I was using a hammer gun my pins are coming down at a angle they were on one side more and I could fix it by pushing on the pin and break any sharp edges with a emery board.

Aurelio,

I recommend you try some Poly SpredR shells in your Hammer Gun and see what happens, I have had absolutely no trouble with them, every once in a while I do have a problem with the RST primer puncturing also. I do believe the Poly SpredR's will eliminate your problem with the primers.

The poly SpredR's work just like the RST's the only difference is the RST tend to shoot a little softer, out of our Hammer Guns. The difference is so slight that it is hardly noticeable. The Poly SpredR Primers seem to be a little higher quality and I have not had one puncture yet.

I would switch shells before I messed with the Hammer Gun Firing Pins.

Good luck buddy,

Dave I had problems with the poly also but still plan to use the spreader for my 1st shot and regular game shells from rem. or federal for the second.

Aurelio,

If you are puncturing the Poly SpredR Primers I would say your pins need filed rounder on your old Hammer gun. 1st I have ever heard of the poly primers having problem.
