In view of my building frustration in being able to find 'factory' 16 GA target loads on anyone shelves - looks like I have start 'rolling my own'.

I haven't felt this kind of pressure in longer than I care to admit.

Anyway, I'm looking for a 16 GA recipe for a 1 ounce load at 1200 FPS.

Bill This is one of those it depends kind of questions. What gun(s) do you want to load for and what hulls do you want to load? If you go backwards through the pages in this section you'll see lots of threads on this. No need to stress, lots of good people here to help you get going. Smile

I know you specified 1 oz ... I've gotten a couple boxes (700+) from our buddy Stack here of RGL cases . Really great 2 reloads . 14.5 Clay Dot or 700X , DR , 3/4oz 8 or 8.5's . Load great , shoot great . Have been over 40 at both trap and skeet . Not great , but OK for all the shooting changes I've had to make . Work the 48 without a hitch . Come out of the M12 which the Chedd cases won't .

I'm shooting a Browning Citori 16 GA Upland Special.

I have a slowly building inventory of (black) Remington Gun Club hulls.

I say 1 ounce at 1200 FPS, because that's what it says on the box

Since you will have the freedom to load what ever you like, I would consider loading lighter than 1 ounce to save on recoil and components, assuming that these are just practice loads. I have gone clear down to 5/8 oz. now and am very pleased with the results. Many folks here swear by 3/4 oz. target loads.

Bill, Are the Remington hulls you have the Remington Game loads, not the gun club line? I don't recall seeing Gun Clubs in 16 ga. Anyone else? If its the Rem game loads, the Claybuster 7/8oz and 1 oz wads work well in those.

I use both these as go to Winter Trap loads in an 870, IMO they mimic the 1oz #7.5 RGL load in every aspect, including somewhat sharp recoil.

Rem Plastic 1 oz. Herco 20.0 Win 209 Rem SP-16 1253 10,600

Rem Plastic 1 oz. Longshot 22.0 Win 209 Rem SP-16 1250 8,900

For less recoil (less insulating clothes) and efficiency shooting warmer weather Trap I'll switch to a 7/8oz #8 load.

for short/med range work I find 5/8-3/4oz loads with fast powders (RD, Promo, E3) are far superior for the same reasons already stated and FWIW I also enjoy shooting a 16ga CUS as my main shotgun for most things not Trap.

I shoot sporting clays and skeet with 7/8 oz 16 gauge loads.

The recipe is Cheddite hull, Cheddite 209 primer, 14 grains 700x, 7/8 oz of #8 or 7.5 lead, and Claybuster wads. In a 2 3/4" hull, the blue CB0100 wad requires 3 pinto beans or some other filler to achieve the proper crimp. This load chronographs at 1233 fps.

The CB0078 wad still uses 2 pinto beans.

I have tried this load with the DR16 wad. It requires no fillers. However, it is very inconsistent in terms of velocity. The Claybuster wads are very consistent.

When the crimps split, I cut the hulls down to 2.5" and load the same recipe with the SG 16 wad and no filler.

With a MEC loader, you can easily adjust a 1 oz charge bar to throw 7/8 oz or or lighter loads.
I simply cut a plastic bushing from clear vinyl or some other thin plastic (such as milk jug, or the lid from a yogurt container.)
Simply cut a rectangular shape the height of the charge bar.
The length is such that it fits the interior (circumference) of the shot opening.
Throw and weigh a few charges. Cut the height of the plastic to achieve the charge weight you desire.

I haven't felt this kind of pressure in longer than I care to admit.

Anyway, I'm looking for a 16 GA recipe for a 1 ounce load at 1200 FPS.

1 oz. shot, SG16 wad, 20 gr. 20/28, ~1250 fps

7/8 oz shot, DR16 wad, 17 gr. Am. Select, ~1260 fps

These are my two loads for clay targets.

Drop a half grain of powder to get closer to 1200 fps.
