I found the following two recipes on the Hodgdon website. Bothe use Cheddite 2.75" hulls. Does anyone use either of them or can anyone comment as to why not to use them? Thanks in advance.

Both are 1 ounce loads.

Hodgdon Universal Claybuster WAA16 19.9 7,100 1,165
Hodgdon Universal Claybuster WAA16 21.2 8,300 1,220

It doesn't say in your post so I looked the loads up and see that they are 1 ounce loads. Those both look outstanding by the numbers. I have never used that powder though and am not familiar with the grain/ flake size. If it is as fine as Longshot, powder leakage will be a problem (there is a cure for that), if it is coarser, then I would say load 'em up and enjoy.

Universal is a large, flat flake powder. Migration should not be an issue IMO. I've loaded 16+ pounds of it with no issues.

I use Universal in everything but .410 and 12 ga. In the 16 ga Cheddite hulls, I load 1 ounce at 1200 fps with Universal and the SG-16 wad. Great crimps with this load.

+1 on what riflemeister said. I had terrible bloopers with Claybuster wads/universal in Fed/cheddite. The SG16 is a much better fit

Thanks for the replies. I am new at reloading so I appreciate the help. I am assuming I cannot simply switch the was but rather need a completely different recipe. My main motivation is the low/moderate pressure of the two recipes I listed. Thanks again.

You shouldn't have to. 20.0 of Universal, w209 primer, sg16 wad(Ballistic Products 072 SG16),1oz in a Herters cheddite gave me 1190,1194,1175 over my graph.

Would the pressure be around the 7,100 mark?
