Just out of curiosity -

Does anyone out there have recipes for 16 GA 1-1/4 & 1-3/8 ounce loads ?

Recipes within safe chamber pressure limits.

Bill,
The info I use is from older Lyman Shotshell Handbook 2nd edition using the discontinued primers (57/157) with W-571/HS-7 Powder and the old dark emerald green Remington hulls. The info is well within safe boundaries. There are many more formulas using Federal and older Winchester CF hulls as well as newer powders. I have a supply of discontinued material and have stayed with them. Good luck, Ron

A really good 1 1/4 oz load here .

http://www.16ga.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=8350&highlight=tested

Load #2: (This is a great load IMO and patterns very, very well for me.)
· 1 ¼ oz #6 lead shot (Remington)
· Cheddite Green Hull (8 mm brass) 2 ¾” 16 ga
· Win209 Primer
· 22.5 grains Longshot powder
· Cheddite 1628 wad

FPS (1209, 1211, 1217, AVG 1212 ES 8 )
PSI (11000, 10600, 11200, AVG 10933 ES 600)

The ch1628 wad is not available , but the ch1632 is the same wad except it doesn't have the little nubs in the over powder cup . Ch1632 is available from Grafs

I've gotten the Ch 1632 wad from Grafs and sons, haven't seen them on the precision site. I had a couple loads tested with them and 1 1/8 oz of shot, posted it here last fall.

Just to be sure that I understand

What does PS stand for ?

What does DR stand for ?

What does VP stand for

From the 1992 Hercules reloading pamphlet:
Federal Hi-Power with paper basewad, 1-1/4oz shot, 1260fps, Fed209 primer (NOT 209A!!), RemSP16 wad, 30.5 gr BlueDot, 10,200 psi.
-- ACTIV shell, 1-1/4oz shot, 1260fps, CCI209M, Rem Sp16, 30.0gr BlueDot, 10,000psi

That's all I see looking through Hercules/Alliant 1987 to 2018, Hodgdon 2002 and on, Winchester edition 1 to 15, about 10 IMR booklets, NobleSport and Vectan.

BK - PS is Precision Shooting ... DR is the DR wads powder cup only ,( like the old Plastic Gas Seal). VP is the 1680 wad from Ballistic Prods . It was also recommended if you want to use a shot protector , to use wax paper (wax side in) . You might be able to use a mylar wrap , but I'm a little iffy about that from mylar being a little grabby from some of the things we used them for at work .

Hey Bill, when working up your 1 3/8 "super mag" load; did you mess with Steel powder at all?

PUTZIE , I WAS FAIRLY SURE MOST OF THE DATA i COULD GET AT WOULD BE OVER THE TOP . AFTER GETTING SOME ENCOURAGEMENT FROM A COUPLE GUYS HERE , JUST TRIED TO GO WITH WHAT i HAD AND WHAT LOOKED DO-ABLE FROM MY OLD #2 LYMAN . HAD BLUE DOT , SO THAT'S WHAT I WENT WITH . ACTUALLY , i SENT 2 LOADS OUT - ONE WITH CARD AND FIBER ONLY . iT WAS LIKE 7800 PSI AND 1050 VELOCITY ! WOW , ANEMIC . THE LOAD WITH THE DR OP WAD WAS PERFECT ! NEVER HAD ANY STEEL POWDER TO TRY , WAS OK WITH THIS LOAD AND WORD MUST HAVE GOTTEN OUT AS VANDENBURG PUBLISHED THE 23GRN VP80 LOAD A COUPLE MOS LATER ....OOPS , I"M NOT MAD - DIDN'T NOTICE THE CAPS WERE LOCKED !!

I did make up a small batch of both 1-1/4 ounce & 1-3/8 ounce loads (a handful of each), but never got to the range to test them.

I have both Blue Dot & Steel powders in my inventory, and I made up the loads judiciously - so they should perform with text book chamber pressures.

I plan to get to the range some time soon and will post my results.

HUH? WHAT'D YA SAY?? Very Happy

BillK, good stuff, lets us know what shakes out with those loads.

I loaded a couple 1 1/4oz #B Bis shells to see what it would feel and look like through a fixed full choke 870 and the pattern printed a perfect Full choke at 25yrd ~22"dia and even. Recoil w/o 3 layers of hunting gear on was not uncomfortable with a #7 gun.

16D, I'm intrigued with this Bis stuff and getting the 16's in the late season Waterfowl game. Looking to mimic my 10ga steel Waterfowl loads from a terminal ballistic standpoint comparing pellet weight and count. Have a couple loads using Steel powder sent off to Mr Armbrust inspired by your super mag's. So far on paper promising.

putzie , many yrs since I dabbled with the 10 other than some of those target loads from Skeet's data .... i guess the best place to start with those big bombers would be to take a big load and try the same volumn of bizz and have tested . Sometimes they woek , some times not so much ... if you are really paying attn to Nicks post , he is going 16+ velocity with a 3/4 volumn bizz load in 12ga and knocking the snot out of everything ! 9's by the way . Your 10 has a lot of promise !!
