With the scope broadened with all species, I will say my favorite would be whichever gun is best suited to the job. Most of the time that will be one of my growing family of 16 ga. SxS guns. Different situations call for different chokes and loads and I make my decision based on those criteria. |

Citori feather 16 with 26" tubes for blue grouse at high elevation.
Although, a long stick or a well thrown rock is pretty much as effective on those birds.

Your blues need to be shot at more! Actually, it seems that blues that see a lot of human activity during the summer months dumb down a good bit. In places where I have regularly hunted them for decades (learn to avoid me) or places where man seldom goes, they tend to run hard and flush hard. |

2 barrels make my Sweet 16 probably the best grouse gun I own, a Modified for prairie grouse and a straight Cylinder for ruffies that won't sit still long enough for a .22LR. I don't really have a good grouse .22 but a 9422 would be a good start I think. |

kgb,
Kirk thought you would like to know, my incredible female Gordon Grouse dog Pine Creek Penny passed away this Memorial Day, at around noon time. I was with her in the game room when she quit breathing. Penny now hunts with my Grandfather and Father on the never ending Grouse mountain where God grants her what ever she dreams of. Things are tough here right now, she was my constant companion for 16 years. No man ever had a better Grouse Dog. I will scatter her ashes in the forest outside the log cabin in Potter/Tioga, Pa where she loved to run.

Pine Creek Penny my incredible Gordon Setter Grouse Dog with one of her many Grouse. Memories to last a life time, from a world class Grouse Dog. I will never forget her.

Sorry to hear you lost one of your favorites. They never live long enough, but what a joy while they are here.
Good Hunting,
Mike |

Dave, that is indeed sad news about Penny. You were fortunate to have her these many years! |

Dave, so sorry to hear that sad news. Please accept my sympathies. My Llewellin Scout turned 11 this past April and I'm beginning to get uncomfortable with how near the end we are.
I'd like to tell about my favorite grouse gun that is a 16 gauge. But I can't. The devil has a hold on me and he's come in the form of a 12 gauge open choked single barrel J & W Tolley that weighs in at 5 pounds even. I don't even know I'm carrying it. The barrels are 29" and while many would consider that too long, I like the way the length balances off the light weight and helps with a smooth swing when needed.
I've been looking hard at my collection and moving all but my very favorites. And despite my enthusiasm for the gauge, the cold hard view has meant a lot of my 16's have found other homes. However, I also have a very clear idea of what I am looking for in future 16 gauge acquisitions and it's a short list (for me) of 6 guns. 2 pumps and 4 SxS. I'm sure one of them, when found, will displace that Tolley!
I'm still holding out hope that GLS will abandon his spot in the queue and Dale will agree to sell me his 16 gauge Tolley single barrel. |

When we had Ruffed Grouse in Connecticut, I used the original style A5 Sweet 16, it was my favorite and first 16 gauge shotgun. I have since passed it down to my son. |
