Gentlemen,
A while back the SSM did a feature article on a J.P. Sauer 16 gauge Drilling. Got to admit I really liked that gun, and am looking to acquire one just like it. That particular J.P Sauer is a serious side lock Drilling and I just can not find one like it any place.
At around 6 Lbs this J.P. Sauer Drilling would be a great gun for our Potter County, Pa mountains, now that we have over lapping seasons for our Bear & Turkey, with our Grouse hunting season. Don't know if I want to shoot another Bear, but a nice Turkey with the Drilling sounds just great to me.
Does any body remember which SSM the 16 J.P. Sauer Drilling article was in, I seem to have misplaced mine.

16er,
Thank you sir, very similar to the gun I am looking for, I saved this on my computer in case I can not find the other gun.

16er,
Now that is very similar to my J.P. Sauer Best 1880's Grouse Gun, and I would certainly like to own that 16 Drilling no doubt about it. I figure it will finally go for around $6,500 and after having to collect the MD tax the total cost will be around $7000.00 or more. - what a beautiful 16 J.P. Sauer Best Drilling.
Thanks for posting

I wouldn’t be surprised if that gun has already been relisted a few times. The 11.5x65r looks to a real challenge to reload... |

Skeettx,
Now that is a much better Drilling set up, you can order direct from S&R to keep your rifle bullets in stock. Looks like they are readily available all the time. Hope to find an 1880's Side Lock Drilling, similar made by J.P. Sauer.

My problem with drillings is why mess up a perfectly good bird hunt
by shooting a deer
If I want a deer, I will just go out to the river breaks and shoot one.
Bag limits are established by county. No person may exceed the annual bag limit of five white-tailed deer, no more than three of which may be bucks. |

Could be worse - at least you can get cases.
I accompanied a friend on his moose hunt a couple years ago. He took his moose with a circa-1880 hammer cape gun, rifle barrel was chambered in 11.5X50R. Shotgun, 16 ga.
For the rifle, he first took a chamber cast, then determined an appropriate parent case, turned the rims a little on his lathe, fire-formed them to the chamber and spent the summer working up an accurate load. And cast his own bullets. He wound up with 50-something grains of FFg over 6 grains of Green Dot - the old "duplex load", long since written out of the reloading manuals - pushing a 365 grain round nose at about 1500 fps.
Broke the moose's spine with one offhand shot at about 90 yards.
Finisher was a home-cast 16 ga round ball in the lungs.
Oh, yeah. He'd picked the gun up for a song some years back because it was broken. It needed a replacement hammer on the rifle barrel. So he got a blank and spent some time with a file getting it right. First. |

DaveinMaine,
Way cool story of a nice hunt with home made ammo and hammer repair. The guy had his act together big time.
I am not into making my own rifle ammo, would prefer to just purchase the correct ammo from S&R if possible. I want to keep looking and end up with something like skeettx shoots, although I want a real nice Side Lock J.P. Sauer 16 gauge Drilling, not a Merkel Box Lock, even thou they are very nice also. Just my preference when it comes to Best Shotguns, no matter what country they are made in.
skeettx,
Mike doubt I will take many deer with the Drilling, I could shoot a nice Buck or prime eating Doe from my front porch at the log cabin in Potter/Tioga, Pa, with my long Barrel Contender Pistol, any evening I want too. The Drilling would be for Turkey, Bear and Coyote along with other varmints. Love to find a .257 Roberts Drilling, although J.P. Sauer probably never made one.

We have a Bear Crossing sign on our property and it's no joke. I like Black Bear and doubt I will ever shoot another one, unless one becomes a cabin raider like the 1st one the PGC had me eliminate.

DaveinMaine,
Thanks for the advise on the 1880's J.P. Sauer Best side lock Drilling model 26 with the 16X6.5 x 5x57R set up that you forwarded to me via PM, I really appreciate it, and will definitely take a close look at that particular gun. Great find.
These are the things that make the 16 forum so great.
Thanks again
