I use a vintage roll crimper with a plunger at the end. Got it on ebay. It works fantastic. 4 or 5 turns of the handle and a perfect crimp. Takes just a few seconds. |

Just curious...I fear the shot pouring out when turning the hull sideways as it's placed in a setup like this...does the overshot card really prevent such a disaster before you start the roll crimp?
I have a pile of once fired paper hulls that I never could get a good crimp on the PW...maybe roll crimping is a better option??? |

Yes, overshot card does keep everything in place. |

I mount mine vertically to alleviate that concern. |

That is a great idea. Never thought of that. Should work better on a bench with a lip (facing board) on the front of it as well. |

I purchased one of these a few months back.
I'll just hit the important details, to save time...
1) Shipping is extended duration, as you would expect. Mine was 5-6 wks.
2) I was unable to produce a roll crimp on either federal or winchester hulls. the hull would buckle on the side prior to a crimp starting. These were once fired hulls, trimmed to 65mm.
(I have the precision roll crimper on my drill press and I can produce nice crimps, btw..)
3) I have not tried to crimp a paper BPI sourced hull yet. I have not settled on a recipe, or had time as of late to do so. I was going to wait until I had tried one of the paper hulls and took some actual pictures prior to a review on this site.
4) At this time I can not recommend this product. YMMV.

With the recent move, I’ve gone through about everything I own... I found this roll crimper in a box of reloading sundries. Looks like it very well be a 12ga model, hence my previous frustration with trying to produce 16ga crimps. If I ever get around to loading 12ga, I’ll give it a try again. I’m quite certain I ordered the 16ga model, guess something was lost in translation?

Loaded some 2.5” 12ga and finished them with the Russian roll crimper. Fairly easy to use, and decent looking roll crimps were achieved. Finally will get to put the Higham English boxlock to use this weekend. Loaded 1oz loads, and the gun weighs 6lbs 4oz, so pretty familiar territory for a 16ga hack. |

Been using both 16 & 12 GA roll crimper from Russia , the casting is miss aligned on the 16 GA but the 12 GA is spot on .
Both make a beautiful roll crimp on everything I have tried them on .
Roll crimping some of the 2.5" 1/2 oz loads for some of the short chambered guns.
I will clue those that have not figured this out yet 😂.
The guns one wants for weight , balance and point ability will be the guns pre 2.75" they made upland guns that were correct in the 20's & 30's.
More nice guns for me , keep buying new guns , I will take the Ole clunkers that no one else wants.
Regards Nick |
