I used to shoot at a club in Michigan where all the old trap shooters used only #7 1/2 shot for the very reasons that Cold Iron just cited.

I have been hit by my own ricochet off a target with #9 shot at station 2 on a skeet field.

I think that #9 is definitely light for trap. However, I think there is one shooter on the US Army Marksmanship team that uses it for the first target in international double trap. The velocity is significantly higher than ATA though.

BTW: Shot last week at Byron for the first time. Nice course.

John finally got the CZ Sharptail 16 ga. Good news is the barrels are properly regulated. But it pierced primers badly so it went back to CZ for a month to get fixed, which they did. Last Thursday I was in Medford, Wi. and shot 300 rounds with my 20 ga. Win 23 and then finished up with 50 rounds with the CZ 16 ga. Probably because of already shooting the 23 so much realized the triggers on the CZ need some work, they are heavy and gritty.

Had the shop in town ruin a Lanber when they did trigger work on it. So I don't trust them at all, and Briley is backlogged a good bit. Wish I knew a good smith I could trust... Hey wait a minute, you have mail! Very Happy

I'll take a couple whacks at this dead horse, all about carried pellet energy. Have watched 9's & 8's splash off birds in Winter even at skeet. So for Trap or long range SC's or 5s shots, I load 8's summer unless stepping back then shoot 7.5's, 7.5's winter, our club doesn't allow larger than 7.5's and strongly frowns (RE; shooting across traffic in parking lot) on anything further back than the 27y line.
