Yesterday I was watching a video from Art's Gun Shop about converting older A5 Brownings to use 2 3/4" shells. He said he used to do a lot of those conversions, but not many now because it possible to buy 2 9/16" 16 gauge shells at Cabela's.

I was just in my local Cabela's and I've also looked on their website and don't see any 16 gauge shells shorter than 2 3/4". Anybody know what he's talking about? I've bought 2 1/2" shells from RST and Polywad and I've also reloaded them, but I'm always interested in another source.

Part of my Boston to DC road trip back in April was to scour the country side looking for 16 GA ammunition.

As for 2-9/16 16 GA shells you will find them right between the Ark of the Covenant and the Holy Grail. Which is just below the upsy-daisium, and right above hen's teeth

IIRC, the Remington game loads actually are not a full 2 3/4" in length. Some have reported using them in short chambered guns without ejection issues. as always, ymmv..

Maybe Cabelas (but doubt it) carry B&P which will work.
Poly wad has short shells, and I have seen in a cabelas once, they had Kent Game Bore which were short also.

I use the Remington game loads often in my rem M11 and in my Win M12 and they work better than full 70mm hulls. I put a tape to an empty rem hull and measured 2 5/8. They also work fine in my 29/16 chambered LC Smith.

A good place to get the Remington shells is at Academy. They sell for $7.99/25 for a normal price with occasional online sales. Free shipping included in most cases. Buy a case of them and they will be delivered to you.

My older RGL's are like Byron says 2 5/8 but the ones I recently got from another member here are within a hair of 2 3/4

Savage 16 , exactly my observation ... However , that small hair is enough to make them work in the winnies etc . Me and Mike Campbell went thru this a few yrs ago and the cases were quite variant . We swapped shorts for longs and everyone went home happy . Just check them after firing - would be nice if you could check them B4 firing !!

Not in my local Cabelas. Not ever.
If I want to buy RSTs over the counter, I go up the road to LL Bean's main store (the one with real hunting and fishing stuff in addition to the soft goods). They carry them (17.95 the box, last I checked) and Kent's Gamebores, too.

Our Cabela's usually has at least some Kent stuff available; nobody in a gazillion miles has RST's on the shelf. Michael Murphy & Sons used to carry some but I haven't seen them there in ages.

Cabelas in Owatona Mn used to have a few boxes on the shelf.
Would think lack of demand hinders them being stocked.

Visiting Art’s a year or so ago, I asked Art’s son Brad about that comment. He admitted that his father was in error and they get their short shells from the internet.

Pinto’s in Renton WA maintains a stock of 2 1/2” RSTs to complement their plenteous inventory of 2 1/2” 16ga M12s, one of which managed to find its way into my ready hands after a very extensive inspection lasting less than a minute. It’s been my number one field gun for two seasons now. Barely six lbs and that short action cycle pops those empties out with hardly a wrist flick. Plain as a barn door though, looks like it could be the same beater gun as the one of the two guys on the 16ga home page. However it’s the best shooter in the closet by far including the 12 gauges.

HOWEVER (going a bit afar here) I watched a couple guys with practice Continental the other day with a pair of nearly identical 12ga M37s, and the way they shredded those low screamers way out there REALLY turned my head! Hmmmmm...
