It has been a long wait this year. Winter let go reluctantly above my home, but the golden trout lakes are finally thawing. Yesterday I journeyed up the mountain to enjoy the summer's first foray for these magnificent trout, 2 wt. fly rod in my backpack. With near 100 degree heat suddenly hitting our valley, the chilly mountain top was most welcome. Rusty and I spent some quality hours at the lake. Some of the fish were small, some were dandies.

I also took the time to climb over into the next drainage for some photos at 12,000' before some darn angry skies, noisy ones, chased us out of there post haste.

That is one big Golden. Is that up in the Ruby Mountains?

Thanks everybody. Riflemeister, I'm in west central Wyoming, but will be headed to the Ruby's in Nevada soon for a scouting run, photos of the snowcock (hopefully), and a live interview with Travis Warren for the UpChukar podcast.

These little journeys are always an adventure. On the ride up the rock and boulder strewn Jeep trail to where I hike from, a tree fell on the roof of the Samurai. One heck of a loud bang! It scared the dog and left me momentarily bewildered, until I saw all the pine bark on Rusty!

I looked out the back window and a rather good size dead tree, victim of pine bark beetles, was now blocking the road, so I got out with a bow saw and remedied the situation. I'm glad for the extra internal structure I welded into the roof for overhead protection. It probably saved the windshield and passenger side door and maybe a lump on my head.

Wyo, pics of the trail tree hazard would be excellent to accompany the beauties of the lakes and fishing. Would make a good article, “In Search of Early Summer Highlander Trout”. By the way, what were you using to entice the goldies?

Glad you and Rusty weren't hurt. The colors of those fish are so incredible that they don't look real. Thanks for sharing

wahoo, orange scuds are usually the best bet in lakes. Streams are different, but the menu is mighty limited. I have written a couple golden trout articles in the past. Maybe it's time to revisit the subject.

As always thanks for the tour and I am glad Rusty and you escaped unscathed.
