I was reading some of the older threads on here, and saw one about the Winchester 1400. Ppl on here were trashing it pretty badly. Saw one recently on the Winchester 1200, and ppl on here seemed to like it. I have both, (in 16 of course), and it seems to me that the actions on both are very similar. Am I wrong about this? Why is one good and the other bad?

Personal opinion from a small sample of users, mostly.

I had a 1200 in 12 ga back in late 60s. Was a decent gun, but not an 870. Sold it in about 1971, and as I recall it was quite worn.

Bought my 1200 in 1965, totally wore out by 1975.

Gave good service, but the parts did not hold up
to lots of shooting.

I guess that makes sense. I haven't shot mine enough to really put them to the test.

Bought my first 1400 12ga in 1964. It was my only shotgun for many years. Probably killed more ducks and geese with that gun than anything I own. Took the only deer I've ever killed with a shotgun with it. Shot in a trap league for 10 years using it. I still have that gun and it runs perfectly on anything you feed it. 55 years.

My first 16ga was a 1400 I found for next to nothing on the used rack at Cabela's. Took 4 hrs to clean it as I suspect the previous owner didn't think such things were necessary. Once clean, it also ran perfectly. Shot skeet with it last week and managed 49/50 dropping only H8. (My fault not the gun)

I cannot speak for the 1200 but the 4 1400s I own are as reliable as my 1100 and ID guns. Maybe they are crap and wear out but if so, I must have the only good ones they ever made. Kinda doubt that.

1200 and 1400's were mass produced. they werent hand made. they were meant for the mass market. some wore out some didn't. but, they will. guns are made from stamped parts or milled parts. its that simple. milled parts last longer.
1400 and 1200's were designed to be tossed in a truck on bloody tailgates w/o fainting. I like the 1400 pistol grips better than the rem 1100. the mark 2 1400 was the improved version with a bolt release button.
1200 and 1400's are a bear to disassemble. many forgo cleaning them because of that. so theyd gum up and quit.
all my 1400's had issues with the forearms. sold them all. 1200 has a slick action, but kick like mules. sold them too.
