Just thought i’d take a moment and say hello. I found this site a few years ago after I purchased a model 90 Marlin in 16 ga. After shooting it fell in love with the gauge. Since then I have acquired an early model 31 Remington that needs restored which is on the back burner. After a year of attempting to find a 16 ga BPS I am piecing together a 870. Figured the 870 will make a good winter project and it will be ready for next year. If anyone has any pet loads they would like to share it would be greatly appreciated.

A little about me, I retired in 2017 after 20 years in the Air Force and now I’m a civilian contractor on UH-1 Huey’s.

Hello Ross

Pleased to have you posting here

I have loaded about 750 16 gauge shells in the
last week or so.

7/8 ounce and Winchester Super Handicap powder

Welcome aboard! My nephew is Army, Chinooks are his bird. What would you like pet loads for? Target? Upland? Waterfowl? Plenty of of available information amongst this crowd. Check out the ammunition and reloading section too.

Welcome aboard! Can't go wrong with an 870.

Pet load; hunt or target? Recoil sensitive?

Have you looked into joining oldhunters reloading library?

Thank you for the welcomes. Right now I’m just looking for a good upland load.

Welcome aboard. You might try an Ithaca 37. 16 gauges are easy to find and there is no better pump shotgun made. Prices are usually reasonable.

Good upland load? It's hard to go wrong with a 1 oz. or 1 1/8 oz. load of West Coast Magnum lead launched at about 1200 fps. I like 800-X for 1 oz. loads and Longshot for 1 1/8 oz. loads. Be careful with wad selection when using Longshot though, it is very leaky stuff and likes to leak past loose fitting wads.

Indeed, embarrassed I didn't acknowledge that as well. Many thanks!!

Not sure your Upland (assuming some Pheasant) is the same as mine in MI, but, through the years (brushbusting = rarely over dogs) I've found 1oz of nickle plated #7 at ~1200fps handles everything I chase, meaning; Grouse, Doodles, Cottontails & Hare's.

Hoping strongly this doesn't start a plated vs unplated derailment. It works for me and that's all I have to say about that.
