No doubt that speed kills with steel. Early 12 gauge steel shells were also slow and subject to lots of complaining about cripples and shooting distance. Much of this has been mitigated by increasing speed of steel loads, which has extended shooting range and lethality. Those of you who load 16 gauge steel to higher velocities or purchase the specialty higher velocity shells undoubtedly have a better load. Factory steel loads in 16 gauge, basically unchanged from their introduction in the early 90s, are limited in terms of shooting distance--my experience is they are pretty deadly out to 30 yards, but start to go south fast after that. Note the short shooting distances I mention in my posts above. |
