Hi all. Looking for a 1 1/16 oz. load utilizing 800-x for Pheasants. I have both Rem hulls and Chedites. I also have SP-16 wads. Looking for 1280-1300 fps approx.

Thanks.

I would like to see the same...but may not be feasible. It would be nice however to have a 1300 fps load like that.

You can get to 1300 FPS with an 1 1/8 oz. load and 800-X.

I have a 1270 FPS 1 1/8 oz. load using 800-X. 1 1/8 oz. fits perfectly in a Federal hull using the SP-16.

What's up with 1 1/16 oz?

I had a 1 1/8 oz load tested, turned out slightly over on pressure. You could drop half a grain of powder or go with your 1 1/16 oz shot to bring in into line. I used the Cheddite case and the so called Cheddite 1632 wad sold by Grafs which increases pressures more than the SP-16.

22.2 gr 800X, Cheddite 209 primer, 1632 wad, 1 1/8 oz nickel plated shot.
1300fps, 11830psi
1304, 11720
1287, 11380
1297, 11460
1301, 11970

1297 ave, 11672 Warning: Above the Saami 11500 psi limit

I want 1 1/16 because I feel it might pattern a bit better than 1 1/8 with larger shot going through a 16 bore. Looking for a pheas. load with 4's or 5's. It's just a hunch, but I want to test it.

so...what do you think if I go as follows...?
22.0 gr 800x, Win 209 primer, SP-16, 1 1/6 oz #5 nickel, Chedite Hull.

When you start mixing and matching, things can change in a hurry.

Hodgdon lists 1 1/8 oz Win209 20 gr 800x SP-16 at 1200 fps but 11000psi. 11500 is Saami max. in the 16.

The load is,

Federal hull
CCI 209 primer
23.0 grains 800-X
SP16 wad
1 1/8 oz. Lawrence Magnum #6

1,270 FPS 9,800 PSI

Just did the patterns this September. Citori with 28" barrels

At 30 yards with the load above

.012" choke - 73% pattern
.023" choke - 93% pattern

At 40 yards with the load above

.012" choke - 44% pattern
.023" choke - 70% pattern

Not sure that dropping 1/16 oz. of shot is going to do much better.

The issue will be that you have to add a filler. Why would you want to to that?

The reason I am questioning you, is that I have a LOT of experience with this load in all types of weather and on pen raised and native birds. I also developed this load about 20 years ago, so I am pretty well aquainted with what works.

The 1200 FPS with the Winchester primer is the reason I went with the CCI 209. 800-X is primer sensitive. CCI 209 and Remington 209 PSTS will create less pressure for equal amounts of powder and allow for higher velocities. 800-X is easy to ignite so no reason to need the hotter primers.

BPI Z 16 wad
Cheddite 209
1,230 fps
9,500 psi
