Wonderful pictures.
I have never looked into the Escanaba area for birds...I've always ranged in the Republic/Crystal Falls area. That's one thing about the UP, birds are found nearly everywhere, and not too much pressure. I think next year I'm going to go NorthEast to the Paradise/Newberry areas...always looked very tempting.
It's a shame to lose a field companion, especially a furry one. I wouldn't want to go through that one bit. Its excellent you kept him in the field as much as you both could spend, those are memories you just cannot replace.
The Great North Woods...sportsman's paradise. |

Thanks for the kind thoughts and here is a tribute to Drummer, from a pup at a few weeks to his last grouse.
Drummer with his litter mate Diesel
Drummer a few days after pick up
Getting to know his big brother Aspen, who didn’t look to sure about his little brother
Learning what a grouse wing smells like
Learning to retrieve from water
In the training fields

An early season grouse somewhere near Ironwood, MI
Pointing in the young maples
Coming out of a favorite haunt
Taking a water break as a pup after pointing three grouse that my buddy and I whiffed on
A fine point while a friend and I were sitting on the tail gate of my Land Cruiser having lunch and we did bag that bird.
With one of my sons and a hard won grouse
A grouse along the Escanaba

At a friends camp near Ironwood, MI along the Montreal River. I rented a cabin there for about 4 years and when he sold the cabin I moved my camp to Marquette where we lived for the 80’s and early 90’s

The road in to a favorite covert
It’s a long drive to this cover
Almost there
The fruits of our labor and Drummer’s last grouse on the last day of the season at the last spot we hunted.

Mike,
Great pictures of a fantastic Ryman Grouse Dog. Real nice tribute and fantastic memories. Cool Yooper hat in the last picture also. Mike how old was Drummer when he passed? Daisy my Ryman Setter female was 14, Penny my female Gordon Grouse dog was almost 17. Because of the way my dogs are housed with the family, my dogs usually become older than most before passing.
Getting another pup can be a good way to lessen the pain, it has for me. I am now starting to look for another Ryman Setter myself. Thanks again for the wonderful pictures of Drummer.

The loss of a great Ryman Setter dog hurts the entire family, and effects the companion hunter/master greatly. Me and Daisy on one of her last Grouse hunts, in my child hood Grouse covert.

Pine Creek Dave,
He was only 8 1/2 and he passed far too young. We suspect Drummer had cancer.
All of my dogs live in the house and the last GSP I had lived to be 17. I have had some only make it to 10 but most have been about 12. The last two setters both went young with the other having contracted a tick virus that affected his nervous system - nasty business and before I discovered Seresto collars.
Regarding a pup, I have had deposits in for 6 or 7 years and we will travel to Idaho this Spring/Summer to pick up a pup. Too bad I didn’t take a pup from the litter Birch sired this past winter, but we didn’t know this was headed our way.
Good Hunting,
Mike |

Mike,
This cancer stuff in dogs is getting to be bad stuff, my Vet found that Daisy hand cancer also when he spaded her at about 7 years old. He believed he removed it all, however it is what finally took her life also.
Good luck with the pup you pick, I am having a blast with my Clearcut Gordon pup right now.

That didnt look like the Fence River Ford to me, but havent been thru it in a couple years. The last time I tried the water was a little high and scared me--decided never to try it again |

It’s not the Fence River either and I am not giving up where this spot is. There are too many people there now. |

Mike,
I agree, you can talk about the state or general area where you Grouse hunt, but never give away your covert locations. Even with the Grouse hunter numbers dropping off so greatly, it seems the hard core Grouse hunters travel around a great deal now.
Good luck to you on your Grouse hunts.

Mike,
Wyssfiresidesetters has some real nice Ryman pups on the Ground right now, I just contracted Mike for a pup out of the Sophie litter myself, something you might also consider. Wyssfiresidesetter in WI.
Hope all is well in your neck of the woods.

What a nice tribute to Drummer. Lots of great pictures and memories. We unexpectedly lost out baby this past Tuesday. Lots of tears in the house. One and hopefully 2 Braques coming home, the first in mid December. The second mid January or maybe sooner. Let the healing begin. |

Dave,
Thanks for the heads up on Wyss, but I have hunted over the October dogs. I like to see the parents in action before I decide on a breeding and as you know it is still a crapshoot.
Get well soon so you can work your pup.
Hayseed,
So sorry to hear about the loss of your hunting companion. I have lost a hunting dog during the season two of the last three years and it sort of takes the air out of the season. Birch and I are going to try and get out tomorrow if the weather cooperates.
Good Hunting,
Mike |
