Splinter forends are approximately as wide as the barrels and don't wrap around the sides of the barrels.
Semi-beavertail forend. The top two with a Schnabel, the bottom picture a more traditional semi-beavertail.
A full beavertail on a Browning BSS for comparison. |

Gentlemen,
Here is a Pre 13 L.C. Smith 16 gauge double gun with both the full Beavertail and Splinter fore-end, with two different sets of barrels. The original Beavertail was a special order item for L.C. Smith at that time. Fortunately for my family the Hunter Arms/ L.C. Smith Company would make and supply any stock set up, a sportsman wanted.
However Special Order items cost the purchaser more money than the standard sales items supplied on most of their guns. The original Splinter fore-end you see beside the 2nd set of barrels is quite a bit less wood than the beaver tail, and quite a bit less weight also. The Splinter fore-end is great for carrying the gun up and down the Pa mountains all day long, while Grouse and Woodcock hunting. The beaver tail fore-end is on the barrels choked for Duck and Pheasant hunting.

I like the semi bt on a clays gun. Especially in the summer, when barrels get hot. |

When it comes to beavertail forearms, this Ithaca pictured in Clyde Baker's gunsmithing book has always seemed the ultimate --
