A fellow club member shoots a fair number of the RST shells, and I thought I would give them a try.
Boy am I glad I did as I have a 100+ yr. old hammer gun that needs feeding.
The only issue I am having is the wad inserting stage. The shell is too short and the wad guide stops short of going in the hull, so I have to remove the shell at that station, manually insert wad, re-insert and keep going.
Loading on an 8567 Grabber.
Components are;
RST 2.5" hull
Rio Primer
17 gns. Green Dot
SG-16 wad (tried the dr-16 too and it worked, but the wad is just too tall)
3/4 oz. #9s
thin 20 ga. overshot card

They look factory when finished.

I am thinking of getting an extra wad guide clip and grinding off the nub that doesn't allow the wad guide to go lower, but I see it slipping.
Any other ideas?

Thanks
Jim

Conjecture
I do not have that machine
Mine is a 9000. BUT I normally use TEXAN loaders Smile

Loosen #87 and lower it, yes, I know, maybe, but give it a try Smile

OR buy a 410 wad guide rod, 89D, it is made for 2 1/2 shells

I have it lowered all the way.
I just ordered a couple of extra wad guides.
I am now thinking of notching the bottom part that hits the stop.
I will report back once done.
Changing the wad guide rod seems like a lot of work.
Thanks

put a coin that fits under the shell holder to raise up the shell to the fingers

Ah . . . 16gaDavis . . . OK idea on a single-stage MEC, but you can't do that on a MEC progressive loader such as the 500, Super 600, 650, any of the Grabbers or the 9000. The IP says he has an 8567 Grabber. On these the "shell holder" is actually a "shell carrier" which rotates or is rotate-able to progress the shell through the stations of the loading sequence.

If I understand what jim18611865 is saying about cutting out part of the mounting tab of the black wad guide (MEC P/N 100830016 for 16 gauge) to mount it lower, then I think he has the right idea.

Question: jim18611865, are you able to adjust your crimp stations low enough to do 2.5" hulls? That surprises me.

MaxSmoke,

Yes adjusting lower was no issue.
Once I get the wad guide modified, I will be able to high speed 2.5" shells.
I didn't touch the pre-crimp. Huge hole in the middle. I lowered the cam a lot, and the crimp punch about 3 full turns. I lowered the final taper crimp die about 3 full turns.

Thanks, Jim. It's nice to know the crimp dies of the 9000 can be set low enough for 2.5 inchers. I have not been loading shorter 16 gauge shells on my 16 gauge 9000, but I have been for a long time on my MEC 600. I was only able to crimp 2.5 inchers on that one by filing out the slot on the cam to get enough adjustment. Its interesting that you did not have to do something like that on the 9000, as the crimp station parts are the same as on the 600. Mine is a real old 600, though.

Short shells are not a high volume need for me (hundreds, not thousands), so I have confined myself to the 600 for those. Thanks to you, it's nice to know I could crank them out on the 9000 if I needed a lot of them quick.

Cheers!
Tony

I modified my existing wad guide.
Worked great. I posted some pics at shotgunworld.
