I may have missed them, and my 'search' function doesn't search. Has anyone posted any 16ga recipes using the IMR Red or Green powders? I have the opportunity to get some in 8lb jugs under $100 with no hazmat, shipping or tax, but I want to be able to use it in my 16's.
Thanks!

Check this site:

Red might not be an option.

I use IMR Green for my 16 ga. loads with the DR16 wad and 7/8 oz. loads.

It uses the same data as published for Green Dot. By WEIGHT not by bushing. It is denser then green dot so will normally take a smaller bushing for the same weight drop. I find it cleaner than Green Dot and like it a lot. I'd be all over those 8 lb. kegs if they were IMR Green.

That is a heck of a good price for those powders.

Red Dot used to be advertised as a powder for both 12 and 16 gauge target loads.

There are not many published loads for less than 1 oz in 16 gauge.

I would bet that 14 grains of Red Dot with 7/8 oz of lead shot, DR 16 wad or equivalent, Cheddite hull and Cheddite primer would yield a velocity between 1100 and 1200 fps.

I would also bet on a pressure below 9000 psi.

If I could buy that powder, I would. I would use the Green Dot in my 16 gauges. I would use the Red Dot in my 12 gauges.

I am not recommending this for anyone, but I would not be afraid of loading up a few shells as I stated above in 16 gauge and fire them over my chronograph.

Thanks to all who responded. I believe I'll get 16lb of each, I doubt that I'll see that deal again.

I would agree to that! Smart move IMO.

Used to use a lot of Red Dot for pistol .357 and 45, and 1 oz. 12 ga. loads. In 1983 took the Coral Sea around the world and saved quite a bit of money so bought a 12 lb. keg of Red Dot when I hit the other side of the US. My previous Toller as a pup sitting in that keg a long time ago.

Green Dot (or IMR Green) still works best with Handicap loads and 1 1/8 payload. And the 16 ga. Went to Clays over Red Dot when Clays came out for 1 oz. 12 ga. and many pistol loads. IME Hodgdon powders burn cleaner than Alliant powders, many others would agree.

About 15 years ago Alliant came out with Clay Dot powder because so many people were switching to Clays so they tried to mimic it in the marketing department but it was and is not Clays.

Hodgdon took Alliant to court over the blatant name stealing but the court ruled in the favor of Alliant.

Hodgdon in retaliation came out with IMR Red and IMR Green. The precedence had already been set at the judiciary level.

I purchase Hodgdon powder when ever I can over Alliant because of it. And because I just plain like it better.
