The woodcock have made it back to my area. Took the dog out to play with his frisbee in the field and on the way he pointed. Looked funny with his frisbee in his mouth, no camera with me. Saw one and couple other splashes. Still patches of snow on the north slopes but gone by my house. Hope the weather continues to cooperate here for them.

Soggy socks,

Thanks for the report, I got to get my new pups into our Woodcock Coverts to do some training on wild birds!

Soggy Socks,

Most times these amazing birds make it thru some pretty nasty weather, lets hope for the best!

My pup was resting a sore on his rear metatarsus so I missed the Spring migration here in Northern IL. Oddly I have not seen the snipe I usually see at this time of year.

Good Hunting,
Mike

Well we got 9 inches of snow, i was worried about the woodcock but there are some wet areas fed by a few nearby springs that opened up quite a few patches. I take my dog for a walk and throw a cloth frisbee for him. Check this picture out.

You cant see the woodcock in the above one but there have been anywhere from 1 to 3 in most of the patches.

In the upper corner of the wet spot if you can zoom in you can see the woodcock. Hes looking towards another one! I've kept him away from most of them since they have nowhere else to go right now. These couple patches are on the way to the field and he knows they are there!

Nice area to run the pup. I miss the north woods and we lived in Traverse City and Marquette, MI for 12 years. In Marquette I could walk out the door and take my pup on a 45 minute walk along Cherry Creek and never cross a road. Now I have to put him in his crate and take him to one of WI Wildlife areas, although they are not far away.

Good Hunting,
Mike

Chicago,

Yes I am very fortunate in that respect I have great neighbors too so once I cross their property I can walk for miles and not hit a road if I have a mind and will to. Unfortunately most of our forests here are mature and the mindset here is to never cut a tree. Grouse habitat has suffered as a result. I retired in 2018 and the dog has given me no peace since then. That's fine with me keeps me off the couch. Joe
