For those of you who really know me, I worked for a gentleman Peter Maffei from 1988 until 2001. The company was Precision Reloading Inc, when it was located in Stafford Springs, CT. Pete passed earlier today. We had quite a relationship, we could be friends, we could be boss and employee, we could be laughing our asses off or we could be mad and yelling at each other. I learned an awful lot from Pete. Recently Pete and I had been conversing about my wanting to move to South Dakota. Since Pete made the move out there years ago, he was willing to share some thoughts and experiences. Oh well.......when things went in the wrong direction he used to tell me "Mark, it's all part of growing up". I will miss him.
Just thought I would share this with everyone. |

Yep, that's for sure. Many of the things we do now and have now was because Pete had the foresight to get things in the hands of the reloaders. Not so much the everyday stuff, but the hard to find items. Everything he did was top notch.
Having a place that actually tested loads right on the premises, for the components that they sold, has given way to people having access to getting their own loads tested. |

While it is the shooting community's loss as well it is not as deep as your personal loss of a friend. Sorry to hear about his passing; I was a customer for years but never knew the man behind the curtain. Gil |

I remember Pete from a couple contacts we had when that last big manual "Blanks to Supersonics" came out. He was a no nonsense guy and ran a first rate reloading company. |

sorry about your loss Mark . Kinda funny looking back at those relationships later in life ! Did Pete have any connection to Precision once they moved out west ? Still use them for tests only because they do yr round , where Tom is more seasonal . |

16gaDavis,
From recent conversations, I believe Pete maintained a friendly relationship with the new owner, but no longer was professionally involved. I know that the staff went to South Dakota for a few weeks to help them get up and running, when the company was sold, but that was about it.
We always tested year round in CT, but back then it was only to develop data for the company.
Dave Erickson,
Blanks to Supersonics took up a lot of time. It was nice because we had a brand new test lab, that was temp and humidity controlled. Properly vented. Everything was contained in one room. The testing was the one part of my job that I wished had never ended. Especially working with steel and non-toxic stuff. Hunting loads are really interesting to develop. I did quite a lot of the testing for that manual, but left the company before it was finished. Peter finished the testing, doing a lot of the slug, 2 1/2" data, buckshot and some other small gauge loads. I did all of the 16 gauge data, using a test barrel we borrowed from Tom Armbrust. Peter sent me one of the first copies of Blanks to Supersonics when it was finished. That manual ain't going' anywhere, because he wrote a nice message in it. |

Mark,
Sounds like one of those very special relationships, few and far between.
Very sorry for the loss of your friend and mentor.

Mark,
Sorry I did not ever meet Peter Maffei. Sounds like a good guy and you were fortunate to work with him. I do not have that manual "Blanks to Supersonics". I wonder how I missed it. I'll have to add it to my collection.
Kind Regards,
Tony |
