After helping both Grandsons get birds during the youth season, Grandpa finally got his turn this morning. Thought a coyote was going to mess the thing up as he moved back and forth along the hedgerow listening to the Tom gobble on the roost. A few deer came through and drove him off before the turkeys flew down so I got lucky. 5 hens and this Tom flew down and slowly worked my way. Only the hens left. 11" beard and 1 1/8" spurs.
Bird had plain lead 6's in the breast, I used homeloaded 1 1/8 oz Nickel plated 5's from quartering away at 20 yards. Dickinson with I/M and full chokes. One of the neighbors kids must of struck out during youth season. |

Nicely done.
13 degrees Fahrenheit this morning for the opener in Minnesota. 6 to 8 inches of crusty snow.
Never saw or heard a bird.
All of my attempts to control the weather have met with failure.
On a positive note, I had no need for insect repellent today. |
