hey from a re loaders stand point it makes sense. less shot, less powder, and less recoil for the gun and your shoulder. win-win in my book. and to top it all off it still breaks clays if you do your part |

7/8 oz is a great target load in 16 gauge, and does work fine in 12 gauge too, although I use 1 or 1 1/8 oz myself. I don't like to push things too far. I think 3/4 ounce is pushing things too far. |

I shoot a lot of 410 and that’s 1/2oz works great on clay targets. I only shoot anything over 7/8 if I have to or want a special load. I have about 12 flats of 12 gauge 1 1/8 but hardly ever shoot it. Now for hunting the lightest I will go is one ounce for dove. |

Crescent, there's a dandy,,,,,looks like a very good day indeed.
Bought a Spanish double earlier this year, layed in new Fiocchi's. Looks like I may have loaded a tad hotter than I needed to. |

Mike,
It must be something about retired military folks and Model 42's. My late boss Pete, retired Air Force, loved 42's. He had a bunch of them, and shot them very well.....I don't |

megasupermagnum,
Today I shot at a course in New Paltz, NY, Mid-Hudson Sporting Clays.
I shot my Citori w/28" barrels.
I took 5 boxes of:
Winchester/Cheddite 2 3/4" hull
Federal 209A Primer
16.0 grains 700-X
DR-16
7/8 oz. West Coast #7.5 magnum shot
I chrono'd similar loads at 1210 to 1230 FPS.
I was using today as a simulation for a registered event. I don't think about loads, chokes, the gun, nothing else but how to break the targets.
After I was all done, I realized how nice the load was. I smashed some honest 45 - 50 yard targets with it.
Thanks for the basic load. It got me to put together a 7/8 oz. load that I actually like.
I am also trying it in some Federal hulls. |

It is a nice combo. It sure seems all the companies now are pushing their own new exotic powders and components. I like to keep things simple. There is nothing wrong with 700x, and never has been. I wish there was more data with it besides 12 gauge. |

megasupermagnum,
I always have 700-X on hand, I use for all my 12 gauge target loads. I have been using it since 1974, it was the first powder I reloaded with.
These loads cycle my 16 gauge 1100 just fine.
The only issue with 700-X in the 16 is I don't think there are a lot of useful loads for it.
But this load certainly is nice. |

Mark , 700X has been the bomb for ever . Probably 50yrs . Have been using your load only 14grns /3/4 oz shot . LIKE !! cycles the 48 ... Been using a Green dot version in my 1187 20ga with 5/8 . Knocks the snot out of trap birds when hit . Shoot a little left with my new eyes , need to fix that , but those little loads PERFORM !!( hows the weather in Connecticuit holding up - yucky !?) |

Weather has been very good. Shot yesterday at Mid-Hudson, perfect day. A little rain now and then enough to keep the grass growing is about all. |

Part of that, is that many people are velocity fiends. There is plenty of 1 ounce load data out there with 700x, but people don't like 1125 fps. It has to be 1300+, or it won't kill.
I am not, and actually prefer the lower velocities. I'll take 1 1/4 ounce at 1200 fps over 1 ounce at 1350 fps any day of the week. |

Unique, Universal are the go to powders for 1 oz. 16 gauge loads. Those will give you velocities from 1150 to 1275. I know that some folks like 1100 to 1125 but right or wrong that isn't the velocity level most folks want.
The other thing, for 1 oz. loads 13 to 14 grains of powder doesn't always give the correct wad column to get a good crimp. |
