With the Julien Dama..s?...looks like a 1920s Paris taxi as transportation.
Sports appear to be leaving a train station from a few days at partridge. You would think them happier if the trip were beginning.
Nice photo capture.

The spelling of Julian as Julien is indeed French and according to my internet search probably derived from the Greek Ioulos meaning downy-bearded. That certainly fits the man in the foreground, so perhaps he owned Julien Dam...... and his truck was filled with pheasant and red legged grouse.
Those cobblestones are more representative of the ones in France than those of the U.S. Ours tended to be more the shape of bricks or actual stones. With all of that said I still think these gentlemen are some of the forefathers of the 16ga society. If we think they are French they were quite fond of the 16 ga.
Good Hunting,
Mike |

If you were seen in the city now, carrying a gun case, they'd be calling it an active shooter. Oh, to long for simpler times. |

hayseed,
Back in the 50's I road my bicycle with my uncles shotgun that needed work done on it, down to Bravermanns in Wilkinsburg, Pa, from just up around the corner in Forest Hills, Pa. Granted it was in a soft case, however nobody said a word, as I peddled my bicycle for about 2 miles. Today because of the change in the neighborhoods and some unconstitutional city ordinances , I would probably be arrested. The gun was a Browning semi-auto 12 gauge used for Duck hunting.
No doubt about it, I would like to turn the clock back to those simpler times also.

A little piece of mine titled "A Parker Goes to the Dentist" appeared in Parker Pages a while back. My former dentist (now retired) is a gun enthusiast and he agreed to x-ray the stock of my Parker Trojan to see if anything was under a dowel that was visible under the butt plate. I didn't think it would be prudent to carry a gun case into a 4-story medical facility so I put the action in a gym bag. Still nervous about being stopped I made it up to the 4th, we x-rayed it, and I made it out without incident, but I shudder to think what would have happened if someone would have checked it !
And by the way, the dowel is still a mystery; extends into the stock only about an inch or so and bottoms out in the hole. |

Here is a September 1, 1905, opening day Prairie Chicken hunt near Frederick, SD, from the December 30, 1905, issue of The American Field --

That’s another neat old photo. One of my sons lives in Ames and I am hoping he makes some hunting connections over there.
Good Hunting,

My old office was formerly owned by a physician, an avid bird hunter. Beside the building was a proper dog kennel for his dogs when he'd leave them before and after hunting during the work week.
As for guns displayed in public, here's a 40+ years old photo of a buddy and me posing with turkeys on the pre-mall downtown main shopping avenue of my hometown. I'm the sport with the 10 ga. SxS. The Jimmy was the current model year. Gil

Gil, that's a great picture and note. You sure have changed your turkey firepower from then to now. |

"Sporting Life" Nov. 28, 1896 Wichita, KS
"Quail Hunting in the Stubble"
Never in the history of the Sunflower State have quail been so plentiful as during the present season. Myriads of the brown beauties swarm the broad prairies, and despite the stringent laws passed for their protection the market hunters are said to be slaughtering them by wholesale and shipping them to St. Louis, Chicago, New York and other large cities in barrel lots.

Those old pictures are a real treasure. You can almost date the picture by how high the dog carries it's tail on point. Amazing what selective breeding can do. |
