I was cleaning up some files and folders on my laptop and decided to share some of my (and my boys') 16 gauge "success" pics. There are a few repeats from prior posts on here, but I think most are new to this forum.

Please post your 16 gauge memories in response.

Thanks. I’ll look into this one.

dap,

Great pictures sir, I copied a couple of them for my RGS Grouse gunning lectures, and gun dog training teaching sessions. Hope you do not mind.

The Setter with the Grouse on the downed tree and the tail picture will both get used in the RGS mentor program, thanks much.

I love the rabbit and squirrel pics and the pump guns. It seems too often we only see photos an American double and perfectly posed birds. Many of us started out with single barrels and fur.

This one speaks volumes.

Grew up shooting ruff in NC Pa. and like many that are born and breed there lived in the Twin Tiers of NY and Pa. Back when there were good numbers of grouse there.

And over the years lived was stationed all over the Country. The Endless Mountains is actually the back bone of the Appalachians and to the East of Potter and Tioga Counties. Despite what some to want you to believe.

Bradford, Sullivan, Susquehanna, and Wyoming counties.

Good luck telling the Endless Mountain Transit Authority (yeah it is a short bus) that you need to be over 5K in elevation to be a mountain though.

At best you would pull 50% red phase in any given year. Most were grey phase. The further South you go the more that increases. By the time you get to Western NC where I retried from the Navy it was almost all Red Phase.

Washington State foothills of Olympics or Cascades doesn't matter most are grey. Same in Mn. at least most years.

That picture is the ULTIMATE in grouse hunting to me. To take care of that many fans and cure and dry them shows respect. A lot of respect. To my favorite color of ruff. Probably in part that it isn't common here. But in general due to the respect that you gave each and every bird you harvested.

In the 60's and 70's growing up where I did if you didn't shoot an Ithaca you were considered some type of Communist. Seriously. Although an 870 was OK. Both of my grandfathers had sold off their Ithaca SxS long before I was born for 37's. Which is what I grew up on.

One of these days when a NID comes across my path in 16 ga. will buy it when it is a later model and fits me well.

Have shot more grouse with a 16 than any other gauge. It is what I grew up with and still use for ruff this day. Recently purchased a FAIR basic because a couple of years ago shot one at the Sweet 16 shoot and Dave Erickson liked to remind me that I never missed a bird with it. So I finally broke down and got one it is at the gunsmith getting a pad put on. After I made it more than 3/4 ways through the skeet field without missing a bird.

New A5 Sweet 16 with Mark Larson modified grip to get rid of that stupid steep radius. And Briley cutting the bbl. down to 23" to make a proper grouse gun.

Rare pair of Mn. Reds. With Ithaca 37

This one that Fourtrax found for me. Same as I grew up with.

UL 37 16 ga.

FAIR NEA 500 16

And a bunch with the 12. But I no longer commit 12 for grouse. Only pheasant. Ithaca 12 ga. 37 UL at 6 lbs. with a few other retired Navy friends that I hunt with from the Admirals house.
