Here is one camera mount I am interested in...
MiniTrack LX3 advertised by omegon.com
Problem is if I order one, I will have to get a much better camera than I have. I last did astro photos with a Pentax LX film camera a lot of years ago. |

That's a hell of a fish, Lloyd. |

Wychuk, when Hale-Bopp appeared in March of 1997, I built a simple double arm barn door tracker that I would manually turn a .25" screw that would track within the limit of creating star trails (" sticks" as you describe). I recently looked for the mount but I may have thrown it away. Simple hardware consisting of scrap plywood, two small brass hinges and a .25" tee nut and bolt and another tee nut to secure it to a simple camera tripod. The camera was mounted on the top board with a ball and socket mount which allowed the platform to be aligned with Polaris but the camera could be pointed in specific direction. I used my old Nikon F 50 mm at F/2.8 for a minute exposure. If memory serves, I turned the bolt ever so slightly every 15 seconds four times for about a minute which roughly tracked at sidereal rate. I used a shutter cable release to trip the shutter. Here's the photo taken in the pre-dawn sky, March 17, 1997 at Ft. Stewart, Georgia. The trees are Southern Bald Cypress. Beautiful camera work by you as always. Gil

Gil, I built the same style of tracking board but with a stepper motor turning a 1/4-20 threaded rod. Shot Hale-Bopp, Hyakotaki (sp) and Halley's. Worked great and still have the board. |
