I finally got the pup, now named Dan, home and settled into the kennel. He has really grown a lot since the last pictures, but still has that cute puppy look. I've been getting him socialized with all the neighbors, especially their kids. and my two older GSP's. I really like the pup's attitude, really bold and adventuresome, but looking to me for reassurance at times. I think he's going to be a good replacement for his big brother who died.
Dan exploring in the yard.
Seems to be easily trained, I already have him digging holes in the yard. |

Great to see the photos of the new pup! Reminds me of the joy when I brought mine home last fall. |

Dan turned 12 weeks old yesterday and is acting more like a bird dog all the time. I think he's still a work in progress on that backing thing, but he's got the pointing down pretty good.
Rebel on point, Bode backing and Dan the pup trying to figure it out. Good job of Rebel staying steady though.
After flushing one of the birds the big dogs pointed, Dan ran over and locked up on point where it flushed from. Pretty nice style for a 3 month old. |

I just got in from giving the dogs their evening run in the fields here. Dan amazed the heck out of me by finding, pointing, and holding steady while I flushed two separate meadowlarks and then chased on the flush. I figured he had potential, but seeing a 12 week old pup perform like that was really special. I may have the pup of a lifetime if he keeps this going. |

I take Dan back to the breeder/trainer, John Prince, tomorrow for the introduction to birds, gunfire, and training collar. At 4 months of age he weighs 30 pounds and is starting to get that long legged, ribs showing look, but also a lot of muscle definition. When I get him back, it's going to be birds and more birds until he goes back to John at 6 months of age for finish training. Every indication is he should be a really nice bird dog, likely not as high powered as Rowdy was, but certainly a hard charging bird finder. |

I've had Dan back from his trainer, John Prince, for about a month now and just trying to hunt his little butt off, getting him on birds and more birds. John was adamant that he was still a puppy and should just get exposure to hunting with no pressure and let him develop as he grows, so no checkcords or stimulations out in the field. I'm amazed how well it is working. I took him over to Spring River Hunts in Kansas last week for a 10 quail package and he found, pointed, and retrieved all the birds except for two I couldn't shoot at, one too low over the dog and another that flew at the preserve owner. I put 6 year old Rebel on the ground and he and Dan hunted up the two getaways, to end up with all the birds in the bag. Dan backed beautifully when Rebel went on point. Dan was absolutely steady on every point, even when I had trouble finding the bird to flush and his retrieving has developed to marking the birds down well, dashing out to pick them up and returning for a bunch of loving before I wrestle the bird away. He may need a bit of force breaking to give up the bird willingly somewhere down the road, but for now it is just perfect.
He is growing like a weed, over 40 pounds and getting long legged.
He hit this bird way out and I had to keep searching farther away before finding it.
He hit the scent cone at full speed and ended up cranked around on this bird.
Dan is probably wondering why that old fart can't find the bird.
One of the escapees. Rebel on point and Dan showing that natural backing of his. What a fun day working the dogs. |
