We thought about cancelling our annual crane hunt to the Texas panhandle but we ended up driving separately in 5 different vehicles, eating in at the lodge and social distancing while we were in the lodge. masks in the A frame and the outfitter add an extra section so we could spread out a little. All but one of us are older so we were careful to avoid exposure.

Fin2Feather,

I fully understand your situation and agree, no need to endanger your mate by doing something you have done many many times already. I just had an elderly gentlemen who had been waiting for an opening here at the dog training facility, call and say he was going to put off traveling until after the vaccine comes out, his wife was in poor health and he did not want to endanger her.

There are more important things in life to consider, use common sense when planning events, right now for sure.

Actually, yes. I doubt it is any more dangerous to stay in an out-of-state motel, eat at a restaurant, etc. than it is to buy groceries, go to social distancing church or go to Wally World at home, but it does add to potential exposure chances. My wife had a major, serious bout with lupus several years back--an immunity disease--so we're minimizing contacts as much as possible. My best to those who have continued to hunt out of state, but I'm skipping this one. If all goes well, we hope to take an extended trip next fall.

I'm probably in the top 10% of those on this site who love to chase wild upland birds with a 16 gauge, but I'll have to do it at home this year.

A friend who I've met out-of-state the last two years did go through with his hunt and his group killed 60 quail in four hard days of hunting! But I'm staying home this year.

Good luck and may God keep you safe.

Mike

Thanks to all for sharing your posts. We decided to put off our trip to South Dakota until next season. The outfitters were very accommodating and understanding -- holding over our deposit and dates until 2021.

The South Dakota COVID-19 rates just kept getting worse and worse as our trip approached. What made the decision to stay home more difficult was the great numbers of birds and great hunting this year in South Dakota, which continues from all reports.

Something to look forward to next season.
