A while ago, a member of this forum graciously gave me this J. Saive (Belgian) 16ga side plated boxlock ejector double trigger o/u, to see if I could do something with it. Saive was apparently a protege of John Moses Browning. This gun appears similar to a Merkel in many respects. As you can see, it has a couple issues, namely wood and screws missing on the forend, which hold the ejector springs in place, and it obviously needs wood and metal refinishing. I've shot the gun as is, and it's a great shooter. Nice and tight, m/f, 2 3/4", great bores, 6.3lbs, well balanced, rock solid gun other than the forend issue.
I've been debating how to pay this forward after I finish working on the gun and getting it back to great condition. Because this society has been so good to me over the years, I've decided to donate $500 of the final, yet to be decided purchase price back to this site, using the paypal link under the "Please help support the site" sticky. That would fund the hosting fees for this site for a year according to the info there. Any remainder will hopefully fund the gunsmithing to replace the missing screws, get the ejectors working, and perhaps my time. Depending on the interest this generates, it may be better to sell it on a gb auction, rather than a set price here. Thoughts? Suggestions?
Thanks,
Mark Larson

I have a very similar J. Saive 16 gauge without the side plates. It’s basically a lightened version of your gun. This one must have seen quite a but of use because they’re exceptionally well made, they just didn’t make many of them. Mine is the “Super Saive” model. I may have posted it her for sale at one point. Whoever ends up with this one will be very pleased. Good luck with the sale and good on you for helping the site. Keep us all posted with whatever transpires. |

Gunsmith says 2-3 month turnaround for the screw replacement. I will probably have it done in April or May. I'm leaning towards re-bluing the barrels and re-working the wood, but leaving the rest of the metal patina. |

I would rather not do that until it is purchased. |

From what I can ascertain, Joseph Saive was a Belgian manufacturer from 1919-1957. O/U's were not common in the early 1900's, so I would guess this was probably made in the 1930's or 1940's. This gun is marked "Super Saive" on the barrels, and was made in an Anson Style, and a side plated version, with a three piece forend. This gun is the latter.
Apparently Mr. Saive was Browning's assistant at FN, and he became quite influential there. Here's some very interesting info on him from Wikipedia:
